Rosy/Blue Bourke Longevity

Postby leezard » Mon Apr 25, 2011 3:40 am

Soooo.....

One week I'm telling my husband that I don't want anymore birds than the pair of canaries we have, then the week after I bring home the SWEETEST indian ringneck.

Then I go to an exotics auction for a new cage for the canaries, but the cage I bid on came with a second cage which was crappy, but didn't care -- I loved the one! And I won the bid! Huzzah! And then when I went to pick the cages up.... I found that they actually came with birds that weren't in them when I had first seen them.

D'oh!!!!

One is a pretty lime green budgie that has been given to a close friend, and the other is a beautiful little Rosy/Blue bourke. The reading materials I've come across tell this cute little birds to live to up to 15 years.

Her band is 1990.

I know they can very often live longer than the lifespan offered in care sheets, as care sheets can be very off the mark, but she's a sweet little bird and I'd hate to see her come here only to die in a few months. Can anyone shed some light on what to expect? She seems healthy, is very active and bright. She doesn't mind being pet, but not so keen on coming out of the cage.

I won't go into my annoyance with the seller.....

My daughter's two lived to be right around 12 year old.

The band indicating 1990 doesn't necessarily mean the bird's 11 years old. Depending on the breeder, they may have had left over bands from the previous year. So, possibly 10 years old and maybe younger. The little bands like that come in packs of 25 when ordered. Depends on the breeder and how many babies they breed. I still have about 15 bands from 3 years ago.
