Parrot interactions

Postby Nevermore » Mon Apr 25, 2011 11:03 am

I'm just curious....as I am not going to be doing this anytime soon. But somewhere down the line in the hopefully-not-too-distant future.

At the moment, my GCC gets plenty of attention while I'm at work, because I am staying with my parents to save up money for a place. But when I move, things will be different. I'm seriously considering getting him a 'friend' when that happens. Separate cages, and everything of course. But someone to yell at, and chatter with while I'm not there.

Has anyone noticed whether any specific species do NOT do well together?

The way I keep my birds, there may be some who don't really like each other but they don't attack or antagonize each other. Even if they don't get along they do seem to enjoy the companionship of another bird in the room.

Similar sized birds seem to do well with each other.

As for your conure, perhaps you should get another conure, not necessarily another GCC, but perhaps another Pyrrhura species.

I really believe birds thrive off of the company of other birds. I feel confident in leaving my birds for the day, or while I'm on a trip.

I do want zazanomore suggested and get a similarly sized bird. I'd personally be too afraid of putting a much larger bird with smaller birds.

When I was in the process of adding a third member to my flock, I looked for things like species temperment and size. I originally looked at a parrotlet and a cockatiel to add to my budgies. But a few people suggested a GCC and after I researched it a bit, I decided his temperment would be best with the budgies. Now the three of them are great friends and spend the day in eachother's cages.

If I were adding another bird now, I'd probably add another South American species.

My goal is not to have two birds that like to cuddle and play with each other. But can be put in the same room, in separate cages, so keep each other company. While locked up. I know how difficult, and potentially dangerous it is to find two birds that can get along, so I'm not going so far as to hope that they will actually get along that well.

I personally would love to have a bird with the intelligence of an African Grey. But I suppose something too big would also be intimidating to a little bird.

If you're just looking for birds to hang out with your GCC, I've found that budgies do that pretty well. They're close enough in size as to not make it so dangerous to have them out together. My budgies don't really cuddle with or preen my GCC, but they do go in and out of eachother's cages and play with eachother's toys and eat eachother's food. They interact so well with one another that I can have them all out and leave the room for a few minutes and not worry about them hurting one another.

Now, a parrotlet is supposed to be a big bird in a tiny body. I'm still interested in getting one in the future, but I wouldn't necessarily allow the four out together at the same time. Parrotlets are notorious for attacking birds larger than they are. I wouldn't want to risk it.

I'm personally not a huge fan of the Greys. I'm not sure why, but I'm not really a fan of the African parrots. My particular interest is with South American species or Australian species. But I'm sure if you got a Grey that was well socialized with people are other birds and understood it's place as second bird in the flock, it wouldn't be too much trouble to manage. I probably wouldn't let them out together unsupervised, but I'm sure owning the two together could be done.

I think a budgie would be awesome, they truly are HIGHLY underestimated. Mine is amazing, she plays like a maniac and is an acrobat, hanging upside down on her toys and swinging around.

Budgies also love other birds. They are

I would thoroughly suggest another conure.
We used to have a GCC in with two Tiel's, and while they got along wonderfully (would cuddle up togetherto sleep and never fought) we never knew how insane and playful GCC's can be until we had two of them together. They're a little dependent on each other, and I think a devided cage would probably fix that, they're just so cute the way they cuddle up together to sleep, they truly love each other.
I also think another conure would be your best bet if you would like to ever have them co-habitate. They really bring out the best (and worst) of each other!
I would avoid any bird bigger than a GCC, they're such little fighters they'll take on anything bigger than themselves.
