It's pretty sad that one of the most beautiful, available, and moderately inexpensive birds (sun conure) also has a call that most people can't stand. I've been perusing birds on kijiji lately, out of curiousity, and every time I check there are a bunch of new sun conures someone wants to get rid of. Yet they are still being bred!! If some species like these and cockatoos have trouble staying in one home for life, why do breeders keep producing them??

Because they're beautiful, a lot of unsuspecting people buy them at stores- so there's always a market.

I actually don't mind the shrill shrieking of conures or caiques. But I heard the noise coming from a Scarlet macaw today, that I absolutely hated, it's an obnoxious nasally deep honk! It's persistent cackling and so loud. It shocked me because I've never been around macaws long enough to hear them when upset. But it was so unsettling I hated it!

Sun conures can be pretty annoying, but they don't match the sheer decibel level/grating quality of a Quaker when it really gets going. I'm fortunate in that my Quaker is relatively quiet, but she can still wake me up out of a sound sleep with earplugs in from the other side of the house if she starts doing that dentist-drill screaming. I was in a bird store recently that had 4 or 5 young Quakers in a large cage together, and they were all screaming at once. I was standing in front of the cage and it literally hurt my ears.

I kinda like the Sun Conure shriek.
Somebbody else said this about a different bird, that they feel like the are in a rainforest. Thats how their call is to me. First time I heard it i didn't jump...and thn heard the QUAKER. I screamed in front of the breeder!
And the Sun Conures were breeding then...that was when they were at their loudest...and they weren't to bad.
And they dont scream 24/7 so you aren't in the rainforest 24/7.
Thanks a LOAD Rachel =) :sun:

Out of our flock, our Blue crown boys make by far the loudest noise. It used to be annoying but now Ive gotten use to the mid day and evening HONKA HONKA HONKA...SCKKKKKREEEEMMMM...HONKA HONKA HONKA.

My Senegal Sophie is a very close second. She weighs half of the Blue Crown but can do a piercing HA HA SWEEEEEPPP that I can hear from the road of my home.
