Which species get along best?

Postby Michael » Fri Jun 03, 2011 9:40 pm

Which parrot species coexist well together? Which ones can never be together? Do parrots of same size but different species (ie sun parakeet + black capped parrot) get along better? Or do smaller birds get along better with bigger ones because they're less competitive or threat to each other?

This isn't meant to suggest to stick them in the same cage but just to give people a chance to mention what species get along better in the same household vs ones that don't.

I'd say that Australian parakeets get along the best (including the cockatiel, which is technically a parakeet with it's long flat tail).

They are all around the same size, between cockatiels and budgies.

They are the least aggressive of parrots and have very calm personalities. You will often times see them in aviaries together, co-existing peacefully.

I say it depends on each individual bird.

I don't think this broad type of generalization works. For example, while I can have my Lovebird out with my small Pois no problem, if my mom were to do that with her two Lovies and her Senegal, things might not end well.

Apple tolerates Spice, that's about it. They don't really get along too well.
