OK I'd rather it be a short period of time because my mom has to sleep during the day sometimes and a constant chirping will 'pess her off. lol

I second the Green Cheek Conure. Very quiet bird. Playful, comical, snuggly, and entertaining.

I say, go for a hand raised budgie. Budgies make small chippering noises all day. And with one budgie, it's not really that loud.

But once a cockatiel starts going, they can get loud (for only for short periods of time).

you must not of met my budgie zaza =p come to new zealand and babysit him for a week :)

Try a parrotlet.

They need at least 30 mins-1hr with you evry day but will be alright if you give them at least 4 toys and plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. They are fairly quiet, generally not as loud as budgereigars. Can bite hard but not like nerve damaging or anything, the general feeling of a small birds bite, it isn't as hard as a lovebird. Easy to train and loyal. I've taught my two boys to fly to me on command and to go through a hoop. Don't give them a small cage; get a large cage with 1/2 in bar spacing so wings, heads and feet don't get caught.

A :budgie: or a :greycockatiel: is good too. They're known for exessive loud chatter (though that doesn't bother me X3). parrotlets will chatter most of the time too but not real loudly unless they have not gotten attention then they will scream for you. (That happens with all parrots however.)
Also, consider a different kind of parakeet than a budgie. Bourke's are not cuddly but may step up to your finger, Alexandrine's and Ringnecks ( :irn: ) are a little nippy but affectionate, and moustached parakeets are occasionally nippy, cute, lovely and loud. There are others too like the Derbyan parakeet. Quakers have a big bite and are very loud, but are affectionate. Lovebirds can be cuddly but are nippy and their bites really sting.
Remember, this is a lifetime commitment. You can't give away parrots because they become very attatched. They are not in any way a replacement pet for your snake; they are a lifelong friend.
Good luck with your seach for the one!!!
