Torn between three species

Postby KeirTuS » Mon Jul 25, 2011 11:05 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to get a pet bird. This is going to be my first avian pet.

I've already done some research and I've come to three choices. A senegal, indian ringneck, or a cockatiel.

It seems IRN fit my lifestyle more. Mainly because I would be going to school and gone from home for at least 8 hours a day.

Also, I'd like for the bird to talk as well so that my family could enjoy it just as much as I would.

After hearing this IRN http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPoH5UkBFqs&NR=1 I must say I'm quite attached to its voice

I'm planning on getting this cage but I'm just not sure which species to get.

Also, do these birds have different capabilities of learning? When I get the bird, I'm going to train it using a clicker. So I'm just wondering which one would be the easiest to train. Especially to be potty trained. I'm quite sure my mom wouldn't want bird poop in the house.

I would go with a Senegal. I have one and love her greatly. Indian Ring Necks are great as long as you get one hand tame and spend tons of time with them.

Keir - I love Marnie too. He is an energetic rabble rouser. There is one video where his human is fixing their breakfast. The parrots run from that little cockatiel to a big macaw.

He really loves that 'tiel. Have you noticed the 'tiel always has the same response.

Those videos are the BEST! and I agree Mr Pretty BIrd (cockatiel) for me, steals the show!!

From what I've read, IRNs need a lot of interaction to remain tame. For this reason, & because you're choosing your first bird, I would suggest a cockatiel.

There are ways to work around having bird droppings everywhere, but please understand that there's no way you're going to be able to keep a bird poop-free house. If this is truly an issue for your parent, you might want to re-think getting a bird right now.
