Rainbow Lorikeet vs Blue Quaker

Postby Mum2rory » Sun Jul 31, 2011 4:46 am

Hi All, I am considering adding another flock member at the end of the year or early next year but I want to do my research now. I am asking Rainbow and Quaker carers for the GOOD, the BAD and UGLY of these 2 species.
I have researched the internet, you-tubed etc but I really need to speak to people that actually have them, I want to hear some of your experiences.
I know lorys have squirty poo (how do you deal with it?), need specialised diet. But what is it really like to have these guys in your life. Are they one person birds, aggression issues, do they tolerate other birds?
Basically any info you can give me would be much appreciated. Thanks

i have a rainbow lorikeet and i wouldn't trade him for the world, the poo issue is a hard one i just clean his cage out everyday i have a plastic mat under his cage and that contains it.

the diet is not an issue its just 2 teaspoons of nectar powder mixed with warm water and a bit of honey if you want to add sweetness to it. also fruits i give as much variety at possible but stick to in-season fruits, right now jango is munching on a piece of mango

rainbow lorikeets are complete goofballs and mine gets along with every family member, but he has taken a certain liking for my 2 year old cousin. wont stop kissing him

lorikeets are food aggressive so make sure you dont try to take away there food one they have it. they kill other birds in the wild for food sources. just let them eat while they are eating leave them alone

they roll on there backs and do forward flips jango like falling asleep on his back in my lap

Thanks NZJessie. Does He get on with budgie, ignore him, tolerate him or is there no interaction at all and they are kept separate? Cos I have the other birdies, I would like them to be out of cages at same times, they dont have to be best buddies, but at least not attempt to attack each other.

they are housed seperatly it seems quil (budgie) is the one that doesn't want to me friend with jango jango flies over the quils cage and quil bits his feet. i wouldn't trust them out together just because of there size difference and that lorikeets do kill other birds for food. im sure anything that is the same size or close to a lori would be fine but not a budgie, too risky
