What type of playstand for a Senegal?

Postby Cali » Thu Aug 04, 2011 11:12 am

We don't have a playstand for ours yet. There are so many to choose from. I like the ones with the many manzanita branches criss crossing all over, but I also like the ones with a little round table attached. I'm thinking maybe she will like to play on a "floor" if she has a flat space on her playstand.

What do your Senegals like? Is there one that they seem to be happiest with?

Manzanita is too slippery. Unless the bird has sharp talons and is flighted I don't recommend it. Nor Java. A good barky kind of tree is ideal. This one worked very very well for my Senegal Parrot while she had her initial clip:

It was a bit too big at first but I was surprised to find her climbing it with her legs only. She was able to climb the tree with an object in her beak and lift her legs above her head to pull herself up to the next branch like walking up a staircase.

Wow, so really a table top type of stand is fine then? I was looking at those giant things on wheels, but honestly I'd prefer a table top stand because I feel I can monitor her better that way.

What about those ones that aren't made of wood and they have all the ladders and thingies on them? I've also seen some that are part wood perches and then part metal or whatever. They look fun to me. LOL

Really, from my experience, everything but the very top is a waste anyway. The only way my Senegal would be anywhere but the top of that tree is if I put her on the bottom or she climbed down to look for fallen food. To me it seems a waste (unless they are flighted or you can afford it) to get something too big/extravagant. You can load a tree up with toys or offer a single high perch, and they'll choose the boring high perch most of the time.

LOL! Thanks. I will keep it simple.

I have a question about the cage too. How much is too much in terms of toys, etc? How many toys should be in the cage at one time? I have 4 of them now. Two colorful ones and two forgaging toys she's hasn't figured out yet that I made myself out of egg cartons and coffee filters.

I actually have multileveled playstands and I have to say not just the top perch is used, and that is true for a large proportion of my flock.

While it's true that Java might be slippery, I have found that my guys have gotten pretty used to it. In the past, I used to use vet tape on some areas to provide grip but that is no longer necessary.
