Goffin playmate...

Postby Goffin-Goof » Tue Aug 09, 2011 4:04 pm

I posted a couplefmonths ago aboutisha; our newly acquired Goffin. Misha seems to be a little lonely, or we're using that as the excuse to buy another bird.
Question is, which breeds would be compatible with our Goffin... and we do understand the whole personality comes in to play as well. I just don't know where to start.

Thanks!

The same here, another Goffin is definitely the best. But if you plan on housing cockatoos together; I always recommend keeping more than one bird per cage, but you have to be prepared for some difficulties. Especially with white cockatoos.

They have to get accustomed to each other over a period of months, and I never let my SC2's anywhere near each other without strict supervision for the first three-four months, and I didn't let them touch each other until after about five months.

They can be really unpredictable and you have to take it slow. About a year before you put two cockatoos in the same cage, no matter the size of the cage. (But so they can get away from each other when needed, they would need a big cage, preferably at least two meters wide.)

But other than that, I always strongly encourage people to get their birds "roommates" of their own kind. We can never give them the life they would have in the wild, but we can try to give them the most natural lifestyle possible. ("You can take the bird out of the wild, but you can't take the wild out of the bird.")

And BTW - it's species with birds, not breeds. ;) The only parrot breed is the english budgie. Just to tell the difference - a breed is something created by humans, while parrots are wild animals, exactly the same as those still found in the wild.

I have 20 year old DYH Amazon :amazon: Rambo. This year I rescued 1 year old BF Amazon :amazon2: Myrtle. It has been about 7 months now. He likes her but won't admit it. She thinks the sun rises and sets on him, but he pushes her around like a 6 year old brother to a 2 year old sister. Mine are not caged.
