Best bird to be my second?

Postby OneBirdAtATime » Tue Aug 16, 2011 4:00 am

So i want to get a second bird and i'll be letting my little brother have my little budgie, though i will keep an eye on the budgie too.

I'm considering a Senegal, Quaker or Conure (Sun, GCC or Nanday). But i'd like to know information about your birds first then i'll be researching the bird in further depth. :)

I'd like to know like..
Is your bird loud?
Was it easy to be tamed?
What do you feed them?
How much did it cost to buy cages, food, etc?

Thank you! :D

Well it's not in your list but I highly recommend a cockatiel. They are very easy to tame (as long as they aren't aviary birds, aviary birds require slightly more effort) and they are the sweetest birds. I taught my cockatiel flight recall after a week of owning him so they are very easy to train. I feed him a variety of things. Everyday I give him in his food bowl a mixture of seeds and pellets. I also give him a bowl of fresh or cooked fruit and veg daily. They enjoy steamed veggies with unsalted rice. The cage cost around £30. Mine is a male and he has the occasional scream but some are louder than others. Some cockatiels get along very well with budgies, my Ladu's best friend is a budgie. Some don't get along well with budgies but they can get taught to like them. They make great feathered companions, hope this helps.

Yes, my tiel can't talk but he can whistle. I didn't teach him to whistle, he just liked the sound and copied me.

They love sound. Does it sing or just whistle?
My Sweetie likes to make sound with the things around her. She even stomps on things to hear the sound.

Don't get a Cockatiel just because people recommend them to you. I have one, he's a sweetie, but would I do it again? No. Not as interactive or intelligent as I'd like. But a very sweet and loving bird nonetheless.

Aratinga Conures are very loud (Suns, Jendays, Nandays, etc) and I do not recommend one because you might never be able to live in an apartment with one. You need to do long term thinking, 10-20years down the road. Don't get a loud bird if you're ever going to live in apartment, because you might get evicted or have to rehome your bird.

Conures and Quakers in general, are noisier than Poicephalus parrots. Look into the rest of the Poicephalus, and not just the Senegal. All pois are very similar in temperament, but there may be a better match for you than the Senegal.

Read this article and scroll down: http://africanqueenaviaries.com/african ... erview.htm

Also, why are you "taming" your bird? You should get tame re-home from CL or Kijiji or go with a reputable breeder for a handfed baby.

A Brown-Headed Parrot might be a good idea. They related to Senegals but aren't known to be as possessive or nippy. They're said to be very docile, so it might be a good step up from your budgie.

I'm thinking about getting a Brown-Head myself after university. :)

I'm only "taming" my bird because where i live, there aren't many breeders who breed and hand-feed them so the best place i can go to is this place where they have ONLY birds which they are specialists at.

Also, thank you for replying to this thread but i have researched and i found i could do with a parrotlet too? I've found out they are small and they aren't very loud as well.

If i'm wrong, please do correct me for i may make the wrong choice, thank you!
