GCC mutations

Postby wordpainter7 » Sat Oct 22, 2011 4:54 pm

So these are the ones I know of right now- turquoise, yellow-sided, Pinapple, and Cinnamon. But my first bird was sold to me as a "fancy" green cheek, but I've heard these aren't real. Are they actually yellow-sides? The first pic is what Petsmart advertises as their Fancy Green cheek- what is it? The second picture is what my bird looked like (not actual bird- I got it off google) I don't think its a yellow side but I was told "fancy" is really a yellow-side.

Well based on my knowledge, there is quite a lot of mutations of GCC now, and more are probably out there but have very ambiguous names. "Fancy" in that picture appears to be some FORM of yellowsided ...but it does not look like a true yellowsided that I have seen. With that said, it may be something to do with generations and generations of yellow-sided, or perhaps mixed with other colour mutations. For example, camelot macaws despite having a typical characteristic, vary in a high degree of colour as they are suppose to be mostly yellow from the head to most of the wing, some camelots have green or even red/orange heads. But that picture, I personally do not know, Sorry :(

I know there are turquoise green cheeks, turquoise yellow sided, yellow sided, pineapple, cinnamon, red factored yellowsided, red factored pineapple, pastel green cheeks, diluted green cheeks etc.

This website: http://www.feathert.com/newconurecolors.html
gives some pictures and explanations regarding colour mutations and how genes will interact to produce GCCs that will show phenotypic or carry genotoypic variations.

The second picture below the "fancy" greencheek appears to be the standard Greencheek. I have a split - split for blue/turquoise GCC that's almost 7 years old and her colours are just slightly different than the standard greencheek, so at the end of the day, expect a multitude of mutations and variety from the GCC specie.

Hoped that helped!
Cheers!

From what I can tell from your pictures, the bird looks like either a normal GCC or a yellow-sided. I would guess yellow-sided. If you would give me a more clear picture of the front of the bird, I would be able to help more.

Here is a link to pictures of my yellow-sided GCC: http://www.caiqueforum.com/showthread.php/2872-New-GCC!

Usually "fancy" GCC just means one of the mutations. It tends to be a blanket term in those large chain stores to mean something that they can sell for more, but don't really want to take the risk of naming incorrectly. At least it isn't as bad as my bird's first vet, who called him a "fancy hybrid GCC". There is no such thing as a hybrid GCC.

The common mutations are cinnamon and pineapple. Yellow-sided is considered slightly more rare, and to answer your questions, does exist. Turquoise is one of the more rare ones. The very rare ones include American Dilute and Suncheek, as well as a combination of the mutations (e.g. Pineapple turquoise, etc). These last few mutations can cost quite a bit for a little GCC.

If you bought your bird at Petsmart, consider getting it tested for chlamydia. It is transferable to humans, and Petsmart does not test for it. Petco does, however.

Thanks guys. Cage Cleaner, that was one of the best pictures I could find of what my old bird looked like; I was confused because there are green cheeks that are darker than that, so I wondered if it was a mutation I had not heard of.

At least it isn't as bad as my bird's first vet, who called him a "fancy hybrid GCC".
Yikes! Hope you found a better vet.

And my birdie isn't from Petsmart, that's just where the picture is from.
