Sorry i think this is a misunderstanding. When i made that statementi was only talking about the parrots I had, which were budgies That didnt eat much and their cage was easy to do a full clean of. I never meant to imply that this is the case with all birds. Sorry if i offended you. Also, i dont see budgies as a cheap throw away bird, i think they're just as good as any other bird :)
RIP Bo. your epicness lives on in all budgies :D

Parrots are awful pets, do yourself a favor and get rid of it. They're not 'smart', just wild animals locked up in a cage all day. The only intelligence you see in them is completely attributed from your own imagination. If you're crazy enough to have a parrot that fine but don't bash this guy for bringing 'negative energy' for giving his opinion and helping non-parrot owners make a more informed decision. I just don't understand why parrot owners are so defensive about their pets.

Well, after initial costs, my irn is way cheaper than a dog. Vet check ups are much cheaper because I don't have to get vaccinations, flea baths, etc (not to say a bird might not get these things, but no where near as much as a dog).

Ace's food is super cheap. I already eat veggies, whole grains and legumes, so giving him some doesn't affect my budget. His pellets are cheaper and last longer than dog food. His toys are cheaper than a dog's too.

Also apartments don't charge pet deposits on birds. The worst damage Ace has done has been to chew the rubber off my game controller. My roommate's dog has destroyed bowls, glasses, furniture, clothes, books - the list goes on.

Dorp, I don't think parrotowners are more defensive about their pets than owners of other pets. dont know if this is a bigger issue in the states, but I basicly havn't had to explain myself to why I own a parrot a single time, however I do have to explain myself all the time as to why I have horses and goats, both species who actually work in the family company, we run a farmstyle center for kids to come spend time with animals, do some horsebackriding along a trail in the woods or just hang out cuddling / playing with the goats or the chickens... or bunnies... and as I said, even though all the outside animals are "needed" for the center to be as active as it is I still get alot more questions about why i keep these animals, especially the small ponys, wich I cant personally ride but have to train by going in a sulky or walking next to them.
Secondly, I dont know if this is the right forum for you Dorp, the forum is dedicated to parrots and more than abou the parrots, keeping parrots as pets. The only thing a membership here might gain you is bashing, might be what your after... And to be honest your oppinions concerning these subjects are prolly worth as much as as piss in a pool...

hi,
i agree with polarn!! :)

i keep parrot cuz they r changeling n wonderful companion.to be honest im reallyyy far away from my country now for some reason n feel so lonely sometimes,so i bought one.at first i want to buy a dog,but finally i choose parrot rather than dog.i used to live with 3 dogs before, they r really lovely, but now i understand why people prefer parrot that a dog.parrot r different,i have to work to gain their trust really slowly n seeing him making progress day by day make me always energic to see another day.seeing him play make me always laugh,n he cheer me up when i feel homesick. :P

personally i say parrot more difficult to keep n cost more.the play gym,the toys, the food(here is more expensive rather than dog food,1 really small pack pellet can cost u for 20/25 usd).sometimes i also need to war with my neighbor for his disaster screaming
but after all,i love him sooo much n never regret.its all worth it.

I have Lupus and mornings are really bad for me. I try to get up before my mother and aunt to get myself going before they need me. I need at least 3 cups of coffee to get started.

When I just had Rambo he would call "hello" as soon as he saw me then come to me. Now when I head for the coffee pot I see Rambo and Myrtle playing quietly. As soon as they see me Rambo calls and comes. Myrtle lands on my shoulder before I get my first sip. She tells me hello and makes happy noises in my ear while she preans my hair. There is no better way of starting the day.

At the end of the day the cats find their sleeping places. The dogs get a chicken jerkey each which tells them it's bedtime. The boys (terriers) curl up for the night. The girls (chihuahuas) wait for me as well as one cat. At this time Rambo tells me it is "nite nite" and I carry him to his bed. Myrtle is now waiting for me to pick her up and put her to bed instead of going on her own like she used to. She wants the nite nite ritual. There is no better way of ending the day.

Of course the middle of the day is like critter day care with dogs, cats and birds playing together. Sometimes it gets a little noisy but with the pets of 4 people in the same house I just have to deal with it.
