Less aggressive than Senegal really? Then how come Senegals seem to be more popular and what are the major disadvantages (to us) of Meyers?

I don't think I could have one because I think Babylon would be persistent about driving away the competition - especially if it's a hen....but I think Meyers are one of the top companion parrot species. They are basically smaller and less aggressive Senegals.

I have often read that Meyer's do make better family birds as they tend to be calmer than Sennies and also less prone to be exclusive. Obviously this is not always the case, but based on what I have read from other owners, the Meyer's do seem to come out as sweeter most of the times. Mind you, a properly raised and socialized Senegal makes for a great companion as well, but it seems that Sennies require a firmer hand to get that way than a Meyer's does.

Senegals more popular? Well I think they are more readily available..more people breed them and maybe this was due to them being imported in bigger numbers?

Hey. Check out a caique. I think the black headed caique is smaller than the yellow-bellied caique. And both are smaller than Senegals or Meyers. About the size of the sun conure or jenday conure.
Anyone I have ever talked to about these birds describe them a puppies with wings!
They are very social and love to play! I've not heard of them being overly loud but I have seen them learn lots of tricks!

That's true.
But if you have the money they are worh the investment!
Out pet store here in St.Louis sells the black headed and the yellow bellies for around 600-700 dollars.
Which isn't bad for a caique.
I got Marvin my CAG for 1,000. (ow!)

Only $600-$700?!? Here they tend to be over $1,000!
Not that I would want a Caique..too much energy for me and they can be very nippy. All Caiques I've met had their owners warn me about it. But they are very cute :)

Oh and CAGs from breeders here go around $1,500. Go to a petstore and they'll be around $2,000.

Sorry about being OT..

Caiques are funny. I've seen videos of them hopping around (and I've seen them hopping around in person as well). I've never tried to pick one up but maybe at some point I will. How bitey are these birds?

I've not really heard about them being bitey but with all that energy i'm not suprised!
I think it just depends on the bird. At the St.Louis pet store they had two black headed caique babies and they were awesome!
Neither one was bitey but they were young.
They play on their backs and roll around! They were sweet and if I had a bigger house/more money/more time I would have snatched one up!
I know I saw a yellow bellied caique at Petco once and they had a price tag of $ 1,500!!

I never owned one so I all I can say is talk about what I've heard from some owners I've met.
All of them mentioned they tend to be nippy and that the bites can be unpredictable. Some say it's probably more out of playing than aggression though.
However, all owners I've met wouldn't trade their birds for anything.
Personally, it's not so much the possible nippiness as the extra energy that makes me not want to get one. I like my birds more laid back ;)

Now how is that any different than a Senegal Parrot? Sounds just like Senegal personality to me :senegal:
