Second Parrot ...Any suggestions....

Postby KittGCC » Tue Dec 20, 2011 7:39 am

Hi guys , I already have an adopted GCC and I looking to get another bird ,A small or medium ...I would like a handraised baby whatever the species and already have a large cage and toys etc set up ...I'm stuck between poicephalus , parrotlet or another type of conure ...moneys not an issue nor is time , also noise/dust isn't a problem for me but I would like this bird to be cuddly-ish and have the capability to do loads of tricks (talking isn't an issue as my GCC is a heavy talker already). Any reccomendations??? Let me know :) thanks

I would reccomend you to look for another conure so they can live in the same cage in the future, keeping eachother company when you're not around.

I think the important thing is to remember, you shouldnt get another parrot because you want to, but because its a good thing for your current parrot =). For that to be true they should be able to socialize properly, and the chances for that are the biggest with the most similar bird you can find.

Tbh although they are great birds I don't want another conure , I only spend four hours a day away from the birds so my gcc doesnt get lonely ...after doing my research I'm probably going to get a caique or Senegal lol

I've heard stories about both Senegals and Caiques being aggressive towards smaller conures, meaning that they will kill them. BUt I have noticed a few people here who do have both conures and :senegal: :caique: I guess as long as you are careful it'd work

My dream second parrot is a CAG. I'm sure it would not be the greatest thing to do since I own a poi :meyers: but heh...a girl can dream right? :D
Regarding cuddles, my Meyer's loves to snuggle but mostly with my husband! Let us know what you decide!

+10 from me. Completely agree.
I'm still looking for a male Meyers (or red-bellied, brown-headed or even Senegal) for Saga, but they are so darn rare. :(
I think she would be happy for a mate though, she may be "married" to me but she sure ain't being faithful and flirts with everyone (especially guys... she prefers men and I'm not :P) who comes to visit.

Honestly, as far as human nature goes, I would suggest you get the bird you want. If you don't, you'll end up getting it later and then you'll get multiple bird syndrome.

Yeah, that's probably the best idea. Don't make the mistake of getting a bird for your bird, get a bird for yourself. Whatever bird you get, you can desensitise it to your current bird and you can enjoy the bird for your self too.

I disagree. I think this is a bad thing, as it will only lead to both birds getting less of your time, and if they then cant enjoy each other, who's situation have you improved upon?

Dont do a selfish thing, try to consider whats best for your bird. Because really, do you really NEED a second bird for yourself? The one needing a buddy is your parrot, not you.

I can use myself as an example, you have probably seen my thread about a buddy for Stitch. I have worked my ass off looking for a friend for Stitch, but to be perfectly honest, I dont even want a second bird right now. I am doing it because I care about Stitch, and that is why I have spent hours upon hours to look for the right kind of bird, which will be able to live with Stitch.

I am not trying to be judgemental, but getting more birds just because you want another kind or an additional one, is how birds end up with alot less attention from you, as they might need separate cages and separate out of cage time.

If you would listen to the advice given in the thread, and also read up on the web, I would be thrilled, just try to see it from a different angle than wanting a new cool looking parrot?
