Scarlet VS Blue and Gold

Postby abdulrahman44 » Mon Dec 26, 2011 9:59 pm

Hello there,

I will be getting a Macaw soon, and I am completely confused between a Scarlet and a B&G.

I've done alot of research and both have their advantages.

I would really appreciate some inputs.

Also, I had options ranging from a 7 month old Macaw all the way to 3 years old. So my question is, what is the age that you won't recommend a bird to be bought at? When is a bird considered kind of an adult, and teaching becomes relatively tough?

Thanks

The best is to get an ADULT bird. When a bird hits puberty, its personality changes and can often become aggressive and jealous. You see tons of birds on Craigslist that are at that 'teenage' age because people aren't capable of dealing with a hormonal bird.

With a mature parrot, what you see is what you get. No crazy hormonal changes.

I too agree on the adult bird vs a young one. A macaw can live 80-100 years, a 3 year old will be just fine.

Also, from every breeder I've spoken too, blue and golds are much more manageable than scarlets.

I also agree that an adult bird would be better. A lot of people assume that raising a parrot as a baby is best, but like everyone already said, you will have to deal with the hormonal changes and mood swings, whereas if you get an adult, what you see is what you get basically.

Also, I would go with a Blue and Gold they tend to be less nippy than Scarlet's. I think I read somewhere that Scarlet's have a reputation for being nippy parrots.
