DYH Amazon Stole My Heart

Postby Khaiqha » Sat Jan 14, 2012 4:01 pm

I had narrowed down my second bird to either a grey or caique, or so I thought.

The local bird store has had the same Amazons since July, and I had never payed them much attention. Today one of them climbed on my shoulder when I got too close. It stepped off when I asked and begged me for a head scratch. It was also already talking clearly and imitated my laugh.

I went home and spent along time reading up on Amazons, and this is what I really wanted to know - what is life like with an adult Amazon? If anyone could provide first hand accounts of a post puberty Amazon that would be really helpful.

Hi, my lil blue fronted hasn't reached puberty yet, however my brother used to have a bluefronted that was in her 20's when he got her, but she moved with an ex girlfriend when they separated. Amazons overall seems to have a reputation to be quite though birds, neither my lil young bird is particulary though, he is not easily startled tho, but never bits, well nibbles a bit but never hard, my brothers older was the same... that sed atleast over here in sweden a lot of blue fronted amazons is put out for sale when they reach puberty couse people can't handle them, ive heard both ways.. so i guess it has a lot todo with personality of the owner and the bird.
But, there are a lot of different amazons, and their standard characteristics varies alot, some say you wont scratch a yellowheaded unpunnished... but then again a lot of them are just fine.... I'd say for a slightly more accurate response you probably should list what type of amazon your looking at, or which types if several. The yellow cheeked are sed to be nice mellow birds, but so are the Mealy Amazons their one of the biggest amazons tho.
Now you will have to excuse me, english isnt my first language so dont know how to correclty say this and I dont know what the caiques use... however birds impregnate their feathers, and basicly there are 2 different kinds of impregnation birds use, I know greys and cockatoos use one kind and amazons and macaws use the other, basicly amazons and macaws impregnate their feathers with "fat" wich makes them less dusty than greys and cockatoos, so if you or someone in your home is sensitive to dust (I know people keeping greys that has developed dustallergies but has been fine with macaws or amazons, but then again they were sensitive to begin with, just didnt know it) I'm sure someone who knows what it is called properly might fill in on this, if not ill try bring out the lexicon :)

I have a Rambo. He is a 20 year old DYH Amazon and quite the gentleman. The worst part of him in season is the clucking and trying not to step on him under my feet.

My BF, Myrtle, is not quite 2. She has no idea what is wrong with him but has picked up the noise.
