Cockatoo...to rescue or not to rescue.

As you know I have my green cheek, who I bought from a breeder. He is an amazing boy...so quiet you wouldn't even know I had a bird if you didn't see him.

About three weeks ago I took in two neglected green cheeks. I took them to the vet, switched them from seed to pellet, and was able to get them to at least let me scritch their heads a little (they weren't hand tame). I then re-homed them with a wonderful person.

I guess word got out somehow that I had taken in these two parrots. Someone who goes to my University called me yesterday and told me about her 10 year old Umbrella cockatoo who is driving her family crazy with its screaming. Its to the point where her father almost wants to kill it and is desperate to get rid of it NOW. So she called me.

Now, I live in a duplex with very thick walls and the other tenant is only home on weekends. The two green cheeks I took in for awhile screamed up a storm, but I'm sure it can't reach the volume of a cockatoo. Furbie didn't pick up the other birds screaming and actually seemed to enjoy their company.

Honestly, would taking this cockatoo in until I find it a home be a good idea? Or no? Please be honest with me.

I only have experience with green cheeks and an African Grey a relative owns. I'm aware of the needs of a cockatoo, but the noise scares me. Would Furbie pick up the screaming even if he didn't pick up the other cheek's screaming?

no i don't think it's a good idea. i have a ducorps which is supposed to be the quieter cockatoo we live in a house and her flock call can be heard a block away in winter with all my windows closed, spring and summer i get some angry looks from neighbors. unless you talk to your neighbor and their okay with the noise i would find a person with a house.

I suggest referring her to a humane society or bird rescue.
