fell head over heals for a cuban

Postby Polarn » Mon Jan 16, 2012 5:42 am

I met a cuban amazon yesterday, and I just fell head over heals for her, however it is smaller than the bluefronted so it isnt really a suitible match for my little buddy, however I do beleive you can have different species living together, especially 2 different kinds of amazons, but the cuban is about 2-3 inches smaller... So I guess my search will go on, just wanted to mention them, I had never seen one before, but i found it absolutely beutiful..... and, i dunno... I might be the only person there is that can fall head over heals for an untamd bird just becouse they show some kind of curiosity when you visit them, even if they arn't tame enough to go close to you...

I mean arn't they just absolutely awesome! :)

Interspecies can be friends. If you look at the Marnie videos on YouTube, the little ringnecks best friend is a cockatiel. In the same group is a cockatoo and macaw. They all get along.

Rambo is a DYH Amazon who can be refered to like a cargo plane. Myrtle is a BF Amazon equivalent to a fighter plane. They are friends but not best buds because Myrtle can fly and Rambo can't. He gets upset with her when they are playing and she flies away.

2 inches isnt that much of a difference in amazons, it might just well work!

I am in the process of taming our new addition Leroy before introducing him to Stitch, and while I want them together as soon as possible, I believe that you should let each step take its time.

We want Leroy to be able to step up, and preferably reasonably comfortable with hands before introducing them to each other. When doing that, I plan to take it really slowly, 2 separate cages in the same room to start with, followed by supervised playtime together, before eventually having them living in the same cage.
Still, even doing everything right and slowly is no warranty for it to work out, but you at least improve on the odds.

Our two guys are the same size, but different species all together, white fronted amazon and bronze winged pionus. From research and talking to a lot of people, these 2 species should mix well, but of course its down to the individuals! But I am gonna make damn sure to do my very best for it to work :D !

This turned into a rather long post, but my point is, dont be sure it wont work. Look up the facts, research and talk with knowledgable people. It might work perfectly.
Take a look at things like, temprament, length, beak size, weight and see if they match. Also take into account that amazon are known to mix well together!

Yeah i know budgies and cockatiels that are bounded to each others and there is a huge size difference there, I'm not so much worried about if the two of them would have the possibility to get along, more so what would happen if they did get into a fight. However, sadly enough I still have a couple of pennies to save for another bird, as a student a bird is quite a lot of cash both the initial cost and the upkeep, but well worth it. :)

Cubans are amazing, i find it really sad that they often are overlooked by the blue fronts and Yellow napes who, ironically, are the most challenging amazons to keep when it comes to temperament.

I've met a lot of them, both tame and not, and if i ever were to get an amazon, that's probably what i would go for. I understand why you fell for it!
