Pionus

The virtues of this bird are numerous; it's a good size, it's quiet, said to be affectionate to almost everyone it meets and disinclined to be a one person species, not prone to biting, etc., etc. and yet hardly anyone has them. They aren't that much more expensive than a number of the smaller parrots and are definitely less expensive than a great number of the larger species. So what gives? Is it just accessibility? Does their relative inability to talk steer people clear? Are they considered drab or unattractive birds? I'm definitely curious what everyone has to say.

I recently saw a Blue Headed Pionus in a chain pet store. It seemed friendly and it was a little smaller than a typical Amazon parrot.

There might be a few factors related to this. It might not have been caught in the wild as easily and is therefore less available to breed. It hasn't had the type of fame that other parrots have; Greys are popular because of the Alex studies, Macaws are popular because they are strikingly beautiful and eye catching birds, etc.
