New Sun Conure

Postby issy » Sun Mar 11, 2012 3:52 am

I've been doing a lot of research on different bird breeds because I've wanted a second bird for some time now. I was buying food for Sheldon when I saw the sun conure they had for sale and fell in love with it. I got it yesterday and it has settled in quite well.

It's 3 months old and I can't believe how cuddly he/ she is, also loves hiding in my shirt :)

Only problems I'm having is that the poor baby has it's wing clipped and I have to be really careful because it drops to the ground if it try's to fly. Will clipping the 2nd wing help the landing balance out or should I just leave it?

Was Also wondering on how gradual I should make the switch to pellets from a seed/ pellet diet. He/ she just throws the pellets out of the food bowl when I mix it with the seeds but will eat them when hand fed.

Here are some pictures:

I should be getting him/her dna sexed soon, so I need to pick out a uni-sex name. Any suggestions? :)

Thanks for your reply,

I will try using the method in the link to get him/ her on the pellet diet :)

It's pooping time is very strange, I'm used to my Lorikeet pooping every couple of minute's or so :P

I'm going to try and put more flat surfaces in it's cage because it looks uncomfortable when it perches. I will keep it in this temporary cage for a little while longer because the new one is huge.

aisell- thanks very much :)

I'm very happy with the way he/she has been eating, he will go down for his seeds about once a day but it's pellet bowl empties nicely. :)

Very cute! I switch my fosters very gradually and generally stop on about 3/4 pellet and 1/4 seed (As well as fruits and veggies) this way when a new owner picks up their bird they have some leeway on what diet they chose (I reccomend all pellet of course) I start adding pellets to their seed every day a teaspoon until I'm at my desired diet.
As for wing clipping I'd try to let them be or ask a professional (your avian vet?) to help you if they are cut too close there's little you can do if it's just uneven it's correctable.
Good gosh I miss my sun they are so pretty! Congratulations!
I rather like the name Rue for a bird I always want birds without names so that I can use it but alas it appears they all come with names :P

So so cute! If he has only one wing clipped, CLIP THE OTHER ONE! Uneven balance can cause serious falls and possibly a broken keel bone.. It happens..

I've clipped the other wing and he is a little more graceful when he lands. Still takes off flying if I leave the room and he is out of the cage. Can't wait until they grow back. :-)

The newer flight feathers are about two cm grown in already, so hopefully it might be a shorter wait.
