New parents of a baby Jardine

Postby adolia » Wed Mar 14, 2012 2:15 pm

We just purchased a baby Jardine that will be shipped to us in the next few weeks once it is weaned. Previously we had a sun conure so this is going to be a little new for us.

I am hoping to find some Jardine owners out there that can help me prepare for the arrival of our new baby.

We have a 30x30x54 cage with a playtop.

What i need suggestions for is sleeping quarters (and what size to get!), toys, treats, bathing ideas, or anything else you think our new baby might enjoy. I am also looking for a playstand for my work area so the baby can be close to me more during the day.

We have a sleeping tent that our conure loved, but i am sure it will be too small.

All suggestions are appreciated, thanks!

Your cage will be fine for sleeping in, why would you want a smaller cage =)?.

The cage size is fine. Just get a king sized black sheet to cover at night. No need for a sleeping tent, I don't think they are appropriate for poicephalus. Perches and toys are kind of weird because a Jardine's is an awkward size. It's bigger than the small category or parrots but smaller than the medium. Get a little of both I guess cause there isn't really anything suitably sized for it.

I hope you're not going to clip its wings. That would be a bad idea.

I wasn't sure if Jardine's like to be enclosed when they sleep like sun conures do, so i was wondering if we should get a larger sleeping tent or some other snuggly type bed to put in the cage.

I don't think Poicephalus need either. Both of mine sleep just fine in their normal cages. I think tighter spaces just make them more hormonal with no benefit.

oh dear...hormonal birds do not sound fun at all!

thanks for the info, i will skip the sleeping quarters! Any toys that you would recommend for a baby?

We chose not to have "sleeping quarters" for our Jardine's as we were told that they tend to like to burrow/hang out in there and can be hard to get out of. He was happy just sleeping on a higher perch and we put a cover over the cage at night.

One idea: We often had him on/near our desk as we worked (be sure to guard that keyboard and wrap cords) and my crafty husband made a little "house" with an open front and back

that while we were working our Jardine's liked to play in

...and we sometimes took him to Starbucks with us if we were going to be there a while (we found it helped socialize him).

Toys-wise, these guys are chewers so get lots of wooden stuff, which they'll go through quickly. I would collect wooden chopsticks for him. And foot toys (especially with bells inside) -- they love being on their backs. Ours loved the Star Munch Foot Toy and would rip it apart within a day. He also loved playing catch. Well, throwing things as far as possible and then watching us pick them up. He didn't seem to catch onto foraging toys but maybe he didn't get enough time to.

He also liked hanging out on a small bungee "boing" we had in his cage and the larger, heavier one we kept over the kitchen eating counter for him.

Good luck and keep updating about your progress -- there aren't that many Jardine's relatively. Our baby died just a few days after your post and we're still grieving and slowly looking for a reputable breeder.
