I went to pet store the other day.. Sun conure

Postby cham87 » Thu Apr 05, 2012 8:08 am

Yesterday I went to the pet store and wanted to look at the birds they had. I acted like I was in the market for a bird. There was a sun conure there. They claimed it was 4 months old. But they had no paper work and had no band on the ankle. I thought it was strange. Regardless he was hand fed and 549 dollars. Pretty pricey I saw them for 200 bucks online from breeders who ship for 130. The bird its self was truly amazing. I was able to hold him and do so much with him it was amazing. I was super impressed. Hate to say it but it made my Budgie seem like a turnip. The personality was as colorful as the bird itself. Are all sun conures like that?

Yes, and they scream like hell ^^. There has been quite a few threads about screaming issues with sun conures here on the boards recently.

I am curious though, why dont you like your budgie? I have seen a few posts from you where you "question" how good companion birds they are. Yes, they arent as intelligent as bigger parrots, but they still deserve to be loved!

If you were to get an additional bird I feel that you should respect your current bird enough that you take Fleury into consideration when deciding on species. Cockatiels are known to work well with budgies, and from my experience, loving and intelligent birds. I am sure many people here on the forums will agree with me! Ladu, coolhady, glassonion all have cockatiels!

well said cml  ,i found that comment very offensive, some might think mya :corella: is more impressive than penny :gcc: being larger and a better talker but i don't, to me they deserve equal respect and love.and if you feel that way about your budgie now and you get a :sun: will you later see a larger bird that makes the sun seem like a turnip?

Agreed.

You chose a budgie, now respect that relationship and make it work. Its like saying to your partner/spouse 'oh sorry, I found someone flashier and younger than you who's more exciting---see ya!'
Sure the new and flashy seems like 'all you ever wanted' and makes your budgie 'seem like a turnip' but pause and think a minute---what are the downsides to a sun conure and the upsides to a budgie you aren't seeing now due to infatuation?

That sun might be more interactive and flashy---but they're loud as hell, nippy and hyperactive.
Your budgie might be a little less hands on---but I bet he's quiet, cheerful and non-intrusive right?

It's a dangerous head-space to get into--acquiring more and more birds to try and fill the dream 'of the ideal bird'---and you end up with a house full of under-stimulated and stressed out birds because you kept getting one more to try and have the relationship with it that you didn't get with the last one, or your dreams that it didn't fulfill . I've been there. Don't do it. The cockatiel was supposed to a quieter, cuddly bird that didn't pluck, the linnie was to be a pocket parrot that would be my buddy who went everywhere with me...in the end the tiel was spooky and screamed, the linnie bit and didn't like hands...and my grey plucked more and was upset with all the other birds.

Don't just think of the conure in the context of the bird in the store, think of it in the context of your life and routine, plus with the bird you already have. Can you afford the same amount of time to Fleury plus give the conure fair attention time too? Can you afford double the expenses, vet bills, cleaning times...?

What happens when the conure hates Fleury or tries to kill him? Who becomes the 'other' bird who gets locked in the cage while the other one gets most of your time and attention? Who gets to go along for outings? If the answer would be the conure I think you've done your budgie a great disrespect and disservice and tossed him aside like an old toy---he was here first and you should love and respect your relationship.

Jacko will probably never talk like Alex or Einstein, or be colourful like a macaw, she'll never trill and chatter like an amazon or dance and solve puzzles like a cockatoo---but she is sweet, knows me more than anyone, calms me, loves to be scritched, and is a quiet, goofy bird who bites rarely and travels well. I love her and am so happy at how much of an awesome bird she is, focusing on the blessings she brings instead of what she does not. :gray:

I am just a curios individual, I drive a BMW but want a Porsche. When I have a Porsche I will want a Ferrari. It is just who I am :).

I like seeing all of the birds and their personalities. I am just curious about all the different species just as I am with cars. This is the place to ask questions about different species, no?

Sorry if I seemed cold. Thanks for taking the time to respond to my thread!

No problem at all =). Fleury is adorable btw!
Seriously though, if you want a "bigger" bird, look into cockatiels!

I met a Nanday conure once, and I nearly jumped out of my skin when it screamed. I imagine a sun conure's probably not that different.
