Just how loud are IRNs..?

Postby jaimmorr » Tue Apr 10, 2012 8:06 pm

For a long time now, I have dreamed of having an Indian Ringneck... But right now, I'm living in an apartment. That is the bird that I REALLY want, but I feel like I would not be fair to my neighbors if I got one. So, for those of you who own them, how loud are they? The noise level is THE only thing I am concerned with. I am able to provide the bird with the time, space, care, etc that it needs.

I thought I had made up my mind on a Meyer's or a Senegal but I just keep finding myself thinking about how great it would be to have an IRN...

For those of you with IRNs, do you find that you have a very close bond with your bird? The bond is very important to me. I don't want a pet that I just look at or pet every once in awhile. I want a bird that I can really bond with, interact with, train, etc.

Thank you! :)

I only know that I think IRNs are really interesting.

I have two Amazons. Even when they are calling back and forth to each other I can't call it screaming. To me it is beautiful that they are bonding with each other as close as to me.

It depends on the bird I think.

My IRN hardly screeches at all, he prefers to whistle and talk to us. (He's sitting on my shoulder arranging my hair and making 'kiss kiss' clicks as I type this LOL)

But I know of many others that do screech, frequently and LOUD.

I guess if you get it young enough you have more chance of encouraging it to whistle instead of yelling? Check out Marnie on Youtube, she's just gorgeous, a lovely example of what they *can* be like :)

My irn was quiet until I was gone for six days on vacation. During that time she picked up a screaming habit when I'm gone. It is quite loud. My neighbors don't hear her though, and my roommates said the noise level is fine if their door is closed.

compared to some other parrots, they are not loud at all. my Senegal was the quietest of all the parrots i've had. my amazon was the loudest. now i have an IRN named Baybe and he is not bad at all . there are time when he screams like when someone is here he doesn't know, or he wants attention, but over all he is quite most of the time. he will sometimes sit and go through his schpeel of whistles and phrases and is quite cute to listen to.
they are my favorite parrot. mine is a turquoise blue/green color and i keep watching for any sign of a neck ring to start. he is not yet 2yrs old so it will be a while. he is hand tame but not cuddly.
my previous IRN Bette was lutino (bright yellow) and was very nice too. she had a lot to say but most of the time was quiet, not as noisy as my Baybe. i loved that bird but she was lost last summer when i moved here. i am still heartbroken over that.
i have 4 dogs also who know not to bother a bird flying over head or walking across the floor.
so my bird is quite safe with them.
good luck finding your new feathered friend.

Thank you all for your replies! :)

I really love the IRNs, but the more I read about them the more hesitant I am about them. I have heard they're not very cuddly, which is kind of important to me. I have also read that they are quiet birds and I have read that their squawks are piercing and make peoples' ears ring! I think with my living situation right now, an IRN wouldn't be the best choice.

I will keep researching! Lol. I would LOVE an Amazon. A friend of mine has an Amazon and he is sooo sweet. Steps up and just relaxes on my arm. But I am fairly certain that Amazons do not make good "first birds." :(

So far, I am still leaning most toward a Meyer's. I particularly like what I have read about them. I am hoping to visit a bird store (a very good one) this weekend that is about an hour away from where I live. I know right now they have 3 baby Meyer's parrots, but obviously I wouldn't be buying one just yet. Lol. Just going to play and talk to the people there and see if anyone that works there can suggest which species would be the best fit for me. :)

Irns have the reputation of not being cuddly, yet the two I have love being petted. Orion would do tricks for a head scratch, and Ace will do things like refuse to step up unless you pet her first (probably a bad thing). Anyway, if you were concerned abut the noise level of an irn, amazons are not for you.

Hmm. I wish I had better access to more sources of information... For instance, someone close to me that actually owned an IRN! Lol. Thanks for your response. And yes, I did knwo that Amazons are loud. I honestly don't think it would bother ME, but it would most definitely bother my very close neighbors! :( Stupid neighbors!

Hi there. I can't comment on IRN personally but I do own a Meyer's.. Jojo. We've had him about eight months . I must say he is very cuddly :D Loves to be on your shoulder...preening our hair etc. He is also starting to talk quite a bit. He isn't noisy either. I really can't say anything negative at all about our :meyers: . He is soooo cute...he will be on my husband's baseball hat and will peek over the rim at my husband and say "peek-a-boo"
Hope this helps

Thanks so much to everyone! I am still not sure what species of bird I am getting... I can't decide to save my life! I'm doing all the research I can right now, but it would be so much easier to do research if I could just pick one already!

I am going to a bird store tomorrow (Omg so excited :P ) and I plan on handling all that I can and hopefully talking to an educated person there to maybe help the process along a bit!
