Which breed?

Postby ChewToy » Mon Apr 16, 2012 3:19 am

even though I have a budgie atm, I'm just thinking in the future, perhaps when I don't have sky anymore, what kind of bird I might get. I was wanting something a bit bigger than a budgie but still fairly small. what breeds could you suggest, and please note down the pros and cons of them and volume maybe? also a question, is it true that love birds need to be kept in twos?

IMO, an only bird is a lonely bird. I have always kept at least two birds, even if in different cages. My two Lovebirds are both males and hate hate hate each other but they have their cages side by side and I believe that they would miss each other's presence if they didn't have each other. So yes, I would have two birds, and if they couldn't share a cage, I would keep them side by side in separate cages.
If you're looking for a larger bird than a budgie, and haven't had birds in the past, I would suggest a cockatiel from a young age, as they would be easier to tame :greycockatiel: Also cockatiels are typically birds that get along well with other species, unlike the larger parrots that tend to be more territorial and aggressive  Good luck in your search

Yeah I was thinking about cockatiels but they look weird to me. I had a couple of love birds when I was little along with a non flighted budgie. we didn't clip his wings, he just didn't have a wide enough wing span. Ive been leaning towards lovebirds again, so seeing as you are a current owner, could you perhaps tell me more about their characteristics?

I have had three Lovebirds in total and all have been males. I find that when you get a male Lovebird from nine to twelve weeks old, this is the best possible combination (male and young) to have an even-tempered loving pet. I have never had females but known people who have and have also read that females don't tend to be as cuddly as the males and are more aggressively tempermental during hormonal season than the males. All my three males have always been even-tempered and predictable, and during hormonal season, they are just more "affectionate", by regurgitating on their perceived human "mate". My two Lovebirds detest each other and the only times I have only seen them nasty is when they are vying for my affections during free flight out of their cages. This is when I have to be very vigilent that they don't hurt each other. Lovebirds are also very acrobatic, especially the males, loving to crawl into your shirt sleeves, shirt collars. I would strongly recommend two male Lovebirds, getting them at a young age, and keeping them side by side in different cages for company to each other when you are not home. Daily play is very important for them to remain tame  Also with males, there is no worries about egg-laying and possible egg-binding, which can be another heart-wrenching issue in itself :swaying:

Parrots are not classified by breed, they are classified by species. :gcc:

From what I've been reading, and experienced with the Lovies I've had for a total of 15 years, they are just a smaller version of the Caique, with as much spunk, personallity, attitude and playfulness, of course, though, without the talking ability. :lovebird2: < :caique:
