KAKARIKI HELP PLEASE!!!

Postby 0190chaza » Mon Apr 16, 2012 4:22 pm

right i bought 2 kakarikis that are now 4 months old.i was told they were both female, turns out ones a male and now i got eggs.
strange thing is no nest box was used!!
i have incubated the eggs at a heat of 95 F and stored them in a nest box in the incubator on a towel.
i have never bred this bird before so its all new to me and with kakarikis being so rare in england im struggling to find information anywhere.i will list my questions and if anyone can answer please do i will be very grateful.
1.how will i no if the eggs are "good"?
2.if i wish to hand rear them what action should i take once hatched?
3.iv bought formula but what else should i be feeding them in their first weeks

if you weren't breeding why do you have nesting box? females can lay eggs without a male, my cockatoo layed an egg without a male cockatoo.why are you taking them from parents? have you looked up potetial problems this may cause later on?birds need to learn to be birds from birds. when i looked up causes for my cockatoo chewing her feathers off one was handfeeding it's a myth that they will be more tame by breeders to get babies out quicker to make room for more babies parents make to replace the ones stolen from their nest.more babies more money.

i was advised to put the eggs in a nest box in the incubator as my 2 kaks were not nesting on top of the eggs hence removing the eggs from the cage,iv no intention to sell any birds that come from the eggs.my last breeding african grey pair were completely normal from the nesting to the feeding

what exactly are you looking for? being an experianced breeder you know what you're doing.i never said anything about you seeling the babies i was wondering why you would need to hand feed them.i've read about handfeeding and learned it was a way for breeders to make more money by convincing people they could have a better bond with they're birds. my cousin handfed hers for this reason which is funny to me since i seem to have a better bond with mine as she finds it necessary to clip hers to keep him from escaping while mine fly to me.

my two kakarikis are a bit thick as they just ignore the eggs iv tryed suttle ways of showing them to the eggs without moving the eggs but they just wonder off.with the greys they would pretty much guard there eggs and with the greys it was a 1st time effort and the birds done most of the work, now iv got kakariki eggs that are not being incubated by the parents and expecting to hatch by this sunday so what im asking is do i leave them in the nest box once hatched or will they eventually make there own way out ? and how should i go about feeding them their formula.im not keen on handling them and to be honest its pretty hard to hand tame a kakariki because they like to constantly free roam and only wonder to humans out of curiosity or play time? in england its an extremely rare bird,no one has them really and like i say im struggling on information after the hatch

Plenty of people have kakarikis in the UK, there used to be tons of adverts for them in cage and aviary birds and there are always plenty of tables with them on at shows such as stafford and newark. I really think you should locate one of these breeders and speak to them by phone for advice if you can't see them in person. Do you even know if these eggs are viable because from your post I'm not so sure you do?

ok people in the uk do have them (none that i no of) but theres not much info on line about them and no i dont no if they are thats why i put how will i no if the the eggs are good? i dont attend shows and refuse to buy birds out the shops as most shop keepers dont seem to have much of a clue which doesnt help me.iv come on here for help and so far its an interrigation.iv said im new to the kakariki seen and in trying to be a good owner im trying to find out as much as i can iv taken the advice of a vet and moved the eggs to an incubator.not all birds are the same so from what iv learned from african greys could be diffrent from kaks

sorry if you feel interigated that was not my intention. all information is needed if you want help.you did not say the parents refuse to take care of them,if you go on here and read some of the crazy ideas we read on here you would understand.there have actually been people on her asking for the best bird to sit quietly on a perch, colorful so his daughter could have something pretty to look at, talking a plus.i don't know about handfeeding but maybe the parents will take interest once hatched.there are people on here who have handfed maybe look under nutrition and pm them. i do hope it works out for you and your birds.

Try this site. The owners e-mail address is also on the page. I don't think its from the UK but if you get in touch they will give you some advice if they are decent people.
