I find Quakers to be loud but I'm thinking it's all personal preference. I personally can't handle lovebirds for example. I fostered a pair in 2006 and honestly never again. I was thrilled when they went to their new home. I found their noises to be just way too irritating for me. Same for the rainbow lorikeet I fostered in 2006.
A cockatiel's loudest noise is calming to me because I grew up with cockatiels. So what may be music to one person is nails on a chalkboard to the next.
What I've done is youtubed x species screaming to get an idea of the sounds to expect.

Certain species just will never be for me. Cockatoos, lovebirds and Sun Conures for a couple examples. Beautiful birds who I enjoy meeting but I would never own.

What a good way to put it. Thats pretty much exactly how it is, I dont think I could ever have a sun either but I don't find 'teils either loud or irritating either. I don't think the issue is the type of noise though but more the volume, neighbours may not appreciate their lives being intruded on by a parrot screaming no matter how nice they thought the noise was.

All of this has helped me so much! I took the advice of HBP and looked for videos of my speculative breeds screaming. Very helpful for realizing the noise level of certain birds.

Thanks again! If I can't find myself a Meyer's breeder near Edmonton I will likely purchase a GCC.

Cheers!

It's great that you're inquiring about which species is right for you. However, everything we say here will be generalizations. Just like every single poodle won't be easily trainable, so to will there be variations even within each sub-species of parrot. You hear Senegals are quiet. At least that's what I'd read when we were looking into adopting ours as we're also in an apt. However, when our guy wants to let loose with the screaming, I can hear him all the way outside of our building 3 stories down. Thankfully it's a pet friendly community. But I think you get my point. Parrots are very different from dogs or cats. You are headed for at least a 20 year if not much longer commitment with these animals that can take a life of its own. Please read up on more than just which bird might be right for you. BirdsUSA and Bird Talk magazine are great starting places. That being said, don't overlook cockatiels, esp if this is your very first bird. They're very small so fairly quiet, very sociable and super loving, and are more like a 10 year commitment. Good luck!!!

Completely agree with what you've said but don't assume 'tiels are short lived, my Magic was 18+ when he died, not sure exactly on age but his previous owner had him at least 6 years prior to us taking him, then we had him another 12 before he passed.

I dearly love the sounds of my Tiels. Even in a flock their personalities shine through.

:pied: Sweetie is the Matriarc of the flock. She is the most outgoing and the first to try anything new. She can't talk but I understand her tweeters. If I put something in the cage that she does not want she will find a way to put it out.

:greycockatiel: Shadow is Sweetie's mate. He is the smallest and the perfect little tiel with solid, vibrant colors. He can talk some and understand more. Shadow sings to me every morning and night. He is so funny. When Sweetie is on a nest he will stick his head in the box and sing to her.
This past year when Tommy & Tammy had a nest he put his head in the box and sang to the babies.

:greycockatiel: :greycockatiel: Tommy & Tammy are Rachel's birds. Tommy is a lover and always asking for kisses. He loves being held and cuddled. He begs for kisses. Tammy is another matter. She is standoffish. Tammy just does not want to be bothered by people and will only allow touch if she needs help.

:greycockatiel: Bindi is this years baby. Her personality is becoming like Tammy's.

Percival wrote:Hello all! I don't own a parrot yet, but I am planning on finding a feathered companion. I just wanted a little bit of advice regarding my situation. I don't really live in an apartment, but I live in a duplex so I have immediate neighbors. I also have two roommates, both of whom are alright with my purchasing a bird.

I am a full time student, but live very close to the university and when I am not at school I will be at home so I feel I will have sufficient time to play with the bird every day. However I would need a parrot that can entertain itself while I am in class. Also a bird that is social and loving, but not prone to loud noises. I understand that this depends on the individual bird and the owners willingness to put in the time to train good behaviors.

I have been researching for more than a month now, and will e waiting until August before I make my final decision, but I wanted to know what species are recommended for this situation. I gather that Caiques, Meyers, Senegals and Quakers are a good choice, as well as Pionus parrots. I've even told GCC are also a safe bet, but can be loud. The ability to talk is not mandatory for me, just a pleasant, cuddly bird that will play and act as a lifelong friend.

Any advice or guidance in which is the ideal choice would be appreciated.

quakers and most conures are not apt birds bur gcc is said to be quiet. Also with your guideline of a pleasant bird, you have tons to choose from. go to this site and just arrange it to apt birds and there you go. Unless you want more criterias being added you have tons to choose from.

http://www.all-pet-birds.com/parrot-cha ... stics.html

i was also looking for a quieter apt bird and the 2 that was closeest was meyers, senegal, gcc. and i am most likely going to pick senegal because they are the only ones who MIGHT talk. Other 2 will never talk (chances are low enough to be negligible). So therefore that bonus for the senegal gives him the edge.

That list might be a good place to start... but probably isn't a good resource to base your decision on.

The categories also seem too abbreviated and too broad to accurately describe a species. My GCC doesn't resemble the listing on that page at all...
