The categories also seem too abbreviated and too broad to accurately describe a species. My GCC doesn't resemble the listing on that page at all...

its just for a brief overview of the general breed. Obviously shouldnt be the only thing used. Its like saying a girl is stronger then a guy. Sure there might be an exception here or there but in general human males are stronger.

I just went to a breeder today in connecticut and out of all the birds i saw, the senegal was freakin perfect. I am so excited about getting him in the future. I will probably give it another few months before i decide. Also does anyone know of what age is the best to get a senegal?

I don't like the phrase starter bird. Though I am partial to cockatiels I don't consider them starters just because they are small. Their personalities are as big as a Macaw if you take time to know them.

Do you have a rescue anywhere within driving range (200 miles). If so go visit. Many times rescues have older birds who have lost their homes and are already traned and socialized. The rescue can even tell you about personality.

Do you know anyone with birds who will let you come and play?

from my understanding, they are called starter birds along with budgies because they are easier to raise compared to other parrots which i do agree.

Wow! The continued response on this website is amazing, I'm so glad I joined! I have gone to meet several types of birds, and have just spent five weeks with relatives who keep African greys. Of all the birds I have met, I like conures the best, and most especially black capped. I have located one from a breeder and will likely bring him home later this month.

If it doesn't work out, I am set on either a cockatiel or a Quaker.

i noticed reading this thread that you wre courious abou the niose level of certain birds my indian rineck ocasionally makes peircing loud screatches but i have become accustomed to them so that i barely notice them anymore.

I get what your saying, I dont notice my parrots noises apart from the blood curdling scream Ollie does when he is harming himself at the moment.. My boyfriend however does notice every single noise but he says thats only because he worries about the neighbours hearing which is a fair point.
I don't hear my own birds scream but I hear the kid upstairs crying and screaming several times a day even when its only quietly..... Noise is a pretty subjective thing

Tbh I'm amazed at how loud my 'tiel can be, given that they're supposed to be such quiet birds. I love his chatty trills & chirps he makes while he figures out how to sing (he's 5 months old) but every time I leave the house he shrieks, for a long time as far as I can figure. Well, put it like this, he shrieks when I leave and he's still shrieking when I return. It's a heck of a racket, I can hear him out on the street! Luckily I live in a detached house or I'd be worrying about my neighbours.

Hello, it is isn't it? Percy and I are doing fantastically! He's already picked up a few words, and knows several tricks and is my best buddy. He makes a great study companion as there is lots of book work in university! He is also on his way to harness training and just has to figure out that the less he struggles to get the harness off the better!

Luckily for me, Percy is a VERY quiet bird. The only noises he makes, other than his words, are little chirps and meeps. Sometimes if we're watching a show and he is enjoying it (or just gets a fright) he'll let out a sharp cry - sometimes in context of the show too! He is actually loudest in the shower, or if water is running. He LOVES water, so if he can hear a tap running or the shower on he gets talking pretty quick.

Thus far he can say" Baby bird, Percy, Hey Percy, Percy bird, Baby Percy, Hey Bird, and Step Up. He basically can permute all of his words in any combination. My favorite is when he tries to say everything he knows and runs with "Hey baby percy bird." Also, if I put my nose against his beak and say "bird bird bird", he will keep saying bird with me until I stop.

I think the screaming of a bird really depends on how early you curb the noise. Percy screamed for the first week, but because I didn't acknowledge him, or if he got bad I would cover him and completely ignore his existence, he doesn't scream unless he's scared. Instead he knows that he can talk at me, or ring the bells in his cage to get me to come see what he's doing.

I love my bird.
