Conure Biting help

Postby SunConureBoy » Sat May 26, 2012 2:21 pm

Hello All
I recently got a Sun Conure :sun: , he is quite tame I think. He is about 6 months old .when I put my hand into his cage ( I don't move my hand around towards him I just leave it at the entrance of the cage) he will come directly to my hand start nipping my hand and it becomes quite sore, So I was wondering if any of you could give me some advice on how to help teach him not to nip my hand. Thank you

Could be many things really.

Who had him before you? Is he tame? Does he come out? Is he only nippy in his cage? How long has he been in that cage?

Could be territorial and he is trying to warn you off. Could be playing/exploring you with his beak.
Could be doing it because it gets you to do what he wants you to, like back off or some other reaction.

I agree with Marie.
Let him out and see what he does. If he is clipped he is insecure.

When whe let him out he climbed onto our shoulder and wasn't afraid of us but just cautious of our finger , he wouldn't let our fingers touch him , he would climb onto our hands but be biting them at the same time.

We got him from a petshop who clipped his wings before we bought him. :(

I agree with Marie.

I know some people here are of a different opinion but personally I don't reach inside my birds' cages because I know if I do I might get a bite. You can open his cage and let him come out on his own and see if he'll step up once he's outside of his cage.

I also agree with Liz that he's insecure since he's clipped.

He's new to your household so take it slow and check out Basics of Parrot Taming and Training.

Before her wings grew back Myrtle was afraid of hands not faces. We could talk nose to beak and she would come as close as a inch. I touched her with my face while she was on my shoulder. She would rub her beak on my cheek. Until she could fly and knew she could get away from me I was unable to touch her with my hands.

Don't touch the bird while it is on your shoulder.
