Panama Amazon!

Postby Elizebird » Sun Jun 03, 2012 10:09 pm

Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum, my name is Elize. :)

Anyways, I just wanted to see if there were any other amazon owners out there, maybe specifically even some Panama owners! This August I'll be getting my first large-medium bird, which'll be my Panama Amazon called Nala. :amazon: I've only owned small birds in the past (sizes from a budgie to conure.)

I had been researching for quite a while for a next, larger bird before I lost my Nanday, and after falling into a depression of sorts after losing him, it was really time for me to start picking myself up.I decided to finally get that next bird since the house was unbearably empty without my conure.

To tell you the truth, I had been looking at the ecletus and the CAG in particualr since my research had favored them (three months of research...lol) but by the time I went into a few bird stores/breeders and began interacting with the birds my opinion sort of changed. My local store owner who I know very well told me to check out the Panamas he had just gotten... and it was an immediate click.

I have been visiting Nala for about a month and half now about three-four days a week for an hour each just getting to know her before she's weaned. She's amazing! And at her young age she's already vocalizing. :amazon:

So...any words of advice from the amazon community? I know I've invested in a life-long friend here, and I'm really excited for the long road ahead. :D I know they're be a lot of ups and downs, especially in the beginning, but it's amazing how things work out when you put the effort into a bird!

Any Panama owners, too? Wikipedia has like 3 sentences on them...apparently they're pretty rare, at least in aviculture. I've only stumbled upon one other owner, completely by chance, and his sounded amazing. So any info, advice, for PA or just general Amazon owners would be much appreciated!!

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.

I have, or I should say they have me, Rambo a 21 year old Double Yellow Head Amazon and Myrtle is a 2 year old Blue Front Amazon. Even with my other pets, thinking back my life was pretty boring before them.

I have five cockatiels but am trying to rehome the baby.

My puppy pack consists of 2 chihuahuas and 3 terriers. Then there are 5 cats.

I have a young Mexican Red-Head Amazon, also called a Green Cheeked Amazon. They are on the endangered species list so they aren't readily found for pets. Mine is 6 months old now. I've had him for 2 months. He's becoming quite the great whistler, he mimics my barking dogs (both octaves from my Miniature Pinscher to my German Shepherd and is very proud of himself when he fools the dogs to think that another dog is barking when it's really him). He's trying to vocalize and does a lot of mumbling to himself I'd imagine that at some point he may say something.

I'm having a lot of fun with him. I had a Quaker Parakeet who passed away at age 24 so Rafael my amazon baby helped to heal my broken heart. Enjoy your baby amazon! posting.php?mode=reply&f=12&t=8313#
