Need help choosing my pet bird.ASAP

Postby gunnerwholelife » Wed Jun 06, 2012 9:10 am

Hey,
I am planning to get a parrot in few days.
My options are -
1.)Alexandrine Parrot
2.)Mustache parrot.
Basically these are the parrot species which I liked.

What am I looking in my bird pet ?
1.)Should be able to talk some words clearly like an IRN.
2.)Shouldnot be too cuddly like the conure [if he is I dont mind] , less cuddly is fine but total no-cuddly is not fine at all.
3.)Doesnt scream a lot.Once in a day, screaming is fine.

I have 3 budgies with me now.Been taking care of them for around 1 year so I think I am just fine to take on a parrot as a challenge.
Are their any other species which are in the 300$ range and which fit my criteria?

Please help me as soon as possible.
I really want to know more about Moustache Parrots and the diff between them and Alexandrines.I am more inclined to Moustache Parrots but you guys tell me its cons and other birds too.
Sorry for my poor english.
Ty a lot !

First off no bird is guarrenteed to talk, no matter how you bring it up or how much you repeat words to it.
I've no idea what the moustache is like but I know someone with an alexandrine. He is handreared and not cuddly in the slightest but will tolerate being handled a bit. He just tends to sit with his owners and watch what they are doing. His owner says he has a very loud call and vocalises frequently in the day and can go on screaming for up to half an hour, he is also pretty destructive.

I really think you need to hold fire and do a hell of alot more research into parrot species and what your motives are for wanting one. No matter what species you get they all have the potential to come nowhere near to meeting the 3 critera you have said you want in a bird.

I used to want an Indian Ring neck, and I know the Alexandrian is similar to the ring neck, although larger. Even hand raised they usually aren't cuddly birds and are pretty "hands off" when it comes to petting and scratches. Many learn to talk really well, but of course it is never a "for sure" thing, and many never utter a word.

One thing I do know about Ring necks and Alexandrians is that they are quite loud and do not make good apartment birds. They also need a lot of time outside the cage and a lot of one-on-one time with their owners or else they revert back to their wild ways.

Please consider all of this very carefully before getting a ring neck, Alexandrian, or really any parrot for that matter. You need to think about why you want a parrot, and whether or not you are ready to invest the time, energy, and money into a parrot. Please do some more research before making a decision :-) but coming here and asking is the first step!

if you are in an apartment, you do need to consider the noise parrots can make.
if you have your own place you have more options and can decide how much noise you can live with since most parrots are pretty vocal at times.
i hear the Alexandrines are pretty loud (from board members) as i have never been around one in person.
i had a female moustache for a few months and she was very loud when she wanted to be. she would loudly protest if we left the room. she made some real crazy noises for sure.
she was a very beautiful bird with very bold markings. she is now living with a male and thay are hoping for a breeding. i don't think he is as loud.
you really should go to where there are a variety of parrots and see how they are for yourself.
good luck and let us know what you decide to get

p.s. my IRN is not loud to me at all. he is a noisemaker when he wants to be but he also talks and whistles to himself. he is quite independent and love to eat!!!

Thanks !
I have decided to get a Mustache.
I just have to spend some time with the birds at the breeder's place.
Hopefully I will select a quiet naughty bird :P

Guys I am in love with GCC.I am even considering them.

A GCC and a Mustache parrot ?
Who is more apartment friendly ?

GCC is WAY more apartment friendly, mine barely ever screams unless something frightens him. They are also very cuddly, they are smart and very very playful. The only drawback is that they need lots of room to play, and they can be a bit nippy, but since they are small birds they will probably do less damage than a Moustache parakeet, Alexandrian, or Ring neck would. :-)

Go for the GCC.

Mine is playful and not super cuddly but does like scratches. :) Also likes to vocalize before she goes to bed and talks a little though not clearly. However, her vocalizations are NOT loud at all and very appartment friendly.
