How do I help my new Senegal settle in?

Postby SenegalLove » Tue Jun 12, 2012 3:39 pm

Hello. I am new to the forum and after doing a lot of research I was debating between a Senegal and a Meyers. To be honest I was leaning towards a Meyers but I saw an ad for this little girl (named Lexi) and I knew she was the baby for me! I drove a 10 hour round trip to get her so she had a long ride. She is a baby (hatched 3/19) so everything is new to her and she is scared. She is moving around her cage and eating and drinking so that is good. She LOVES her boing perch so that makes me happy.

But she is scared of me. I totally understand that she needs time to adjust so I am just letting her hang out. I am talking softly to her and trying to let her settle in. I am just looking for any suggestions in how to make her adjustment easier. I am not in any rush, we have all our lives to be good friends, I just want her to be happy.

Also, I thought her cage was big enough but after measuring I'm thinking I need a bigger one? It is 22W x 17D x 27H.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Oh, and here is a picture of her in her new home.

The measurements of the cage aren't bad but the way it is built will be unsuitable in the long run. Those wire cages really aren't meant for anything stronger than a parakeet. Those guillotine doors are not only insecure but also hazardous. A Senegal Parrot is too mischievous and strong to be trusted to stay in a cage like that.

Ah, good to know. Do you have any cage recommendations? I am used to having smaller birds :greycockatiel: who aren't too destructive. I will get her a good one very soon!

I think my bird hates me! I am not sure what to do, I think I am doing everything wrong. I can approach her cage and talk to her but if I put my hands in her cage she freaks out! The other day I held a slice of apple and she was eating it and I was very happy, but then I offered her a blueberry and I guess that was too close and she freaked out. So I left her alone for the day.

Today I tried the apple again and she just freaked out! (she screams and flaps, trying to get away etc)

Am I being too impatient, does she just need more time to adjust? I have only had her for a week.

She has only been out once and she came out on her own, I just feel bad for her and want her to be happy and to be able to have out of cage time.

Any help is much appreciated! I feel like I am messing things up with her and I just want her to be happy! :violin:
