Blue indian ringneck hand feeding issue

Postby killerpayne » Mon Jun 18, 2012 12:54 pm

Hey I have got a a blue INR almost 2 months old.The problem with this guy is he was raised by its parents and at 1 and half months was removed from the nest and I adopted him. Now he has never has never been around humans as he was always in the nest . . . so he's scared of me . . . so after few days he will be fine right ?
Also I tried hand feeding it . . my first time :/ [actually the breeder taught me how to make the formula and feed it to the bird . . but he taught me on a tamed 2 month old jenday conure who was used to humans . . . but my IRN is NOT !!]

so he doesnt understand I am feeding it . . . He ate little . . .not much . . .What should I do ?

All I know is that he is sleeping on half filled crop . .may not be even half filled . . crop is showing a minor bulge . . .

What should I do ?
I am taking him to a vet soon.
Its been just 1 day since he came to my place . . .

He's damn healthy . . thats what I think . .
I have attached some pics of him . .

Please also advice how many feeding/day . . .breeder said 3 . . .
Also he didnt tell me much about weaning process but said I should give some corn after 15 days . . .

Please help me out . . .
ps:I dont know the gender . . .but I will call him he for time being . . .

EDIT : Just a while back I feeded him again and he had lots [i.e.he actually ate the formula . . ] . . .now may be he's starting to learn the sad truth that his parents aint gonna come feed him :(
I hope I am giving him all love he needs right now ...
Any tips to gain his trust will be excellent !!

Hes so little!! I got myself into a experience that I didnt plan on .I bought a sun conure I was told was weaned[she wasnt] the breeder gave me formula and showed me how just in case.{Ha] I got her homed and she screamed [I thought conures are loud right?] She was HUNGRY.I had 2 people to call on If I needed help [I suggest you do too] And no one of them wasnt the breeder.I dont think he cared anyway! I at one time thought I wanted to breed [not now] so I had read everything on it.That helped. 2 months I think try 3 feedings.morning ,noon and night YOU MUST FEED HIM .Make sure the formulas warm not HOT test it .Make it like a soup consistency. They need the water[they can get dehydrated].I used a syringe and dribbled SLOWLY[you can kill them] into the right side of her beak .She refused when she was done [dont overfeed].Get a scale keep track of his weight. It will be hard because he was parent raised. But be patient Im sure he will come around. Also keep water in his cage ,cockatiel seed and soft cooked vegs.I think the most important thing is getting him eating regular from you.I didnt seek this out but what a wonderful experience it has been and Im lucky it went well! Good Luck keep us updated :D

HI I also would put a paper towel around him and held it in the back of his neck. With my left hand [like a bib].It steadied him and kept the formula off him. With my right I fed him with the syringe.

Handfeeding is tricky, and if not done properly could harm the bird! Is there anyone else you can ask apart from the breeder, to help you (he doesnt seem to care, he should NEVER have sold a bird that young)?

He's adorable though, I wish you and him the very best so do try to get in contact with someone to help you!

It has only been a couple days. He now knows that you are the food supply and not his parents. Being so young he is afraid of everything and seperated from his bird family.

You have to make him understand somehow that you will be his family. It will take more like a couple of weeks to gain his trust. Everything he knew is gone.

I also have a blue Indian Ringneck (Petey) who came to me at the age of five weeks. When I brought him home from the store I was also concerned that he wasn't eating enough. The trick for me was to be able to hold his head gently but steadily so that I could get the syringe in. After a day or so, Petey gradually started eating a little more, and soon he would let me know when he was hungry by "barking" as only a Ringneck baby can. He also would simply stop eating and turn away from the formula when he was finished, which I always thought was too soon, but after a point he just didn't want any more.

I thought he would never wean, but finally at 14 weeks (where he is now) he doesn't seem to desire the baby formula any more, although he will eat it if I offer it. But he's ravenously eating pellets, fresh fruits (cherries and red grapes are his favorites) and vegetables, and really shares whatever else I'm eating. He loves to eat omelets and salads from my plate with me.

He's also just entering his "bluffing" stage now, growling (yes, growling) and lunging for my hands, eyes pinning, where before he would so sweetly look for me to pick him up so that he could nestle against my neck and go to sleep. He still looks for me to pick him up, and he still sleeps sweetly against my neck, but it's a 50/50 bet whether he's going to nuzzle my fingers or try to take them off - LOL. Fortunately, this is a stage that passes in time, and Petey will almost certainly return to being a sweet-tempered companion once he gets over his adolescent angst. LOL

That said, I agree that unweaned babies should NEVER be sold except to people who have experience with them, because correct handfeeding is crucial to the bird's survival.

Good luck with your new baby!! And please keep us posted. :)
