Hi Ladies and Gents,

I am currently gathering information on what species of Parrot might be best for me. I currently live in an apartment therefore I ruled out my initial choice of Sun Conures.

I am interested in a bird that is easy to train such as recall training, is capable of "talking" (not expected but a plus) and very affectionate.

I have narrowed it down to
Parrotlets
Green Cheek Conures
Canary Winged Parakeets (Do not know much about these little guys but I ran into one and they are very pretty)
Bronz wing Pionus

Don't rule out cockatiels. They are little lovers and a joy to have.

I have a canary winged parakeet. She's awesome and she talks up a storm. I know a great breeder if you decide on one. Very affectionate and extremely smart birds. I also have a parrotlet and she is super cuddly but I don't believe this is the norm for the species. Both are great birds but I love the parrot feel of my canary wing... She's a nice size and eats and plays with her feet.

I believe cml here has a bronze wing pionus. He has said many times that his pionus is great. I've been investigating those myself and from what I have found, they are generally mild-tempered and very smart. You could send cml a private message (PM) and ask about his pionus.

Also, like Liz said, don't rule out cockatiels. They aren't the best talkers, but they are really good at learning to whistle short tunes. And because they are basically tiny cockatoos, they have the friendly, cuddly personalities of the larger 'toos minus a bite that will send you to the emergency room.

Hey! I have a parrotlet and he is absolutly amazing. His name is Blu and I have only had him for a month. He is already learning step up and he loves to walk around on my shoulder. I believe that if you want a bird that can do tricks and talk (about twenty words and tons of tricks with time) but is also cuddly, i would go with a parrotlet!

Perhaps a Senegal or a male Meyer's? I have a Meyer's baby that is talking and I'm teaching her tricks. I know a breeder of Meyer's and Senegals, and she has those birds trained to do tricks, esp the Senegals. Both species can be talkers.

little advice. take out your "capable of talking." part. people in this forum rage like hell if you prefer your bird to have possibilities to talk. They might even tell you that you shouldnt get a bird if you prefer the bird bite less and talk as a bonus(even if its not a big deal for you but would just be a bonus).

if you just say you dont care if it talks or bites or anything like that, you will get much better responses.

some birds even certain kinds that are known for talking abilities never say a word.then they end up in rescues because they did not live up to the persons fantasy of this cute talking bird.we are not trying to rage at anyone we are trying to prevent birds ending up in overcrowded rescues.same goes for biting.

I have seen many occasions when Michael and others blatantly said to the person " birds aren't for you don't get one" when all the person was info and to educate himself. And almost all of the times, the op stated that it would just be a bonus if they have the possibilities to talk or bite less. I find it preetiest ridiculous.

I guess it's better to let people buy the birds who do no research about the birds instead...., everyone was new to parrots at one time. Why not educate them about them instead of saying negative things like " birds aren't for you." I would be willing to bet that the people who abandon their birds never did any substantial research on them and were never in sites like this asking or help.
