What is this guy?

Postby xinaes1 » Mon Jun 25, 2012 11:15 pm

Hi, I'm new to parrots and would like to research this guy myself without having to bug people with my newbie questions :) Only one problem, I don't know what he is! I would be much appreciated if someone could give me a starting point!

It is because of the red on the upper part of the wing.Mitreds are similiar but have less red.

Thanks! Just out of curiosity, does anyone here have one? Everything I'm reading says they are comical, outgoing and cuddly, with of course the screech...BUT almost all of the youtube videos I've seen of these guys, the owners make it sound like they are the next best thing to satan! So many comments on how aggressive they are. Am I just lucky on picking the worst comments or am I falling in love with the devil?!

Guess that depends on what type of vids your watching, are they the ones with the type of owner who thinks they are just another animal or something cool to show off or the ones that know what they are doing? The latter will know birds scream, occasionally bite, chew etc and they generally wont mind. Of course that doesn't stop the good uns getting annoyed from time to time- just like you would at a child but it doesn't mean they don't love them :)

Pick the worst comments and learn how to deal with them before they arise.

Sometimes they can be terms of endearment. My friends called my IRN devil bird, satan, satan's little helper, angry bird, etc, but they all loved her.

Yeah, that's a Cherry Head. Are you thinking of getting one? They are the most amazing birds. I had one for quite a long time- we grew up together. I lost her one winter few years ago. I was overseas for work and while she was being baby sat by a friend she flew out the door. I can tell you about them if you like. What do you want to know?

Yes, they are VERY aggressive, but that isn't so much of an issue if you train them. They are not for first time bird owners, though. Have you had birds before?

This is mine

Yes! Any info is much appreciated! I had a tiel for years but that's the only bird I've owned. I'm not intimidated by aggression and my feelings wouldn't be hurt if one minute he was cuddly and the next he's in a "mood" but I really would like cuddly when he's not being moody. So far I've read a lot about comical behavior and aggression but nothing about cuddly. Whether that is just individual personality or the type, I don't know. I can't help but be drawn to their mischievious look but non cuddly will be the deal breaker for me :(

Yep that's a Cherry Head. I have one that is at least 20. I describe Izzy like Chinese food: sweet and sour at the same time. One minute very affectionate and cuddling, rubbing her face against my cheek, the next minute nipping my finger and sassing me with a squawk. She is an enigma. This bird is very adaptable I will say. Her first owner had her 16 yrs. and died. I inherited her and placed her in a CHC aviary with a friend's flock, in hopes of babies but after 2 seasons no eggs, no bonding. Very imprinted on humans and mature-- she came back home to me a few months ago and remembered me right away.

Izzy sometimes gets real jealous of my other birds and I think would like me all to herself. If she can see me playing with another parrot, will squawk endlessly and VERY loud. However, all I have to do is cover the half of the cage facing me with a sheet, and she cannot see me ...out of sight out of mind. That usually stops it. So if you have a CHC that does that, it may be best to keep it in a separate room that you frequent eg the computer room etc. I will do that sometime in the future, right now only one room avaialable for all 3 fids. She does know what shut up means tho', and "shhh" and "talk in your inside voice." But my African Grey says Shhh as a result. LOL. Occasionnally Izzy will do the loud squawking for no apparent reason, and if I give her a quick shower and it breaks her concentration. Then she likes to go right back in her cage and preen problem solved and no improper reward for noise making.....

But when I am away from the home, she does not do the squawking. Only when she knows I am there, and wants me to pay attention to her. If I leave that room, and am in another part of the house, she doesn't do it. I have a baby monitor I take to the rest of the house with me, and no loud noise making. So its mostly jealousy and attention when she can see me.
