Introducing a new parrot to a lovebird

Postby Svej » Tue Jun 26, 2012 3:31 pm

Hi everyone, I'm hoping your collective knowledge can help me out here!

I've had a lovebird for about a year now, he's about a year and three months old. He's really bonded to me, as I live alone and he gets to spend most evenings and weekends with me. He follows me around and hangs out on my shoulder a lot, so he's pretty much the centre of attention at my place.

Do you think, under those circumstances, it would be possible to introduce another parrot? I'm thinking perhaps a conure or quaker ... something medium sized. I'd plan to keep them in seperate cages of course, in seperate rooms to start but hopefully in the same room over time. Maybe he will like to have a bird friend when I'm away at work? I'm not sure ... I am worried my current bird will be jealous and aggressive towards a new bird. I've heard that lovebirds can be very territorial? We just moved to a new apartment a few weeks ago but I think he's settled and considers it "his" apartment by now.

He is really good with meeting new people BUT perhaps that's because he gets all the attention, so I'm not sure if that would carry over to meeting a new bird.

Anyway, your thoughts on the matter are appreciated! Thanks for your time.

Hi Im all for bird friends :D Your guy will probably be jealous ,but be glad he has someone to chit chat with. You can have their cages next to each other .But I wouldnt take a chance of them being together[lovebirds are small!] As for species Conures and Caiques are a blast lots of affection and they want to play [lots of toys ,foot toys and swings]also a big wide cage.My Caiques will go to everyone :D Try to see the ones your interested in person [you will know when the right one comes along.]Thats how I got my hawkhead .I could tell she was going to be a great bird[I didnt even know anything about them.] Glad I gave it a chance :D Good Luck
