Arshia wrote:Wow, cml! That's amazing - you actually went to Canada to pick up a bird? What a lot of effort for a pionus.
Just wondering, how's it's temperament? I hear they don't squeak too much and was considering getting one.

Is it cuddly? Is it playful? Can it fly well (if you taught it to recall)?

As for the white fronted amazon, I haven't even heard of them let alone seen them.

I didnt go to Canada, as I am not living in America that wouldnt be my neighbouring country ;).
But I did take a 5 hour train trip, spent 4 hours picking him up, and then took a 5 hour trip back home so thats quite a lot of time and effort spent anyway =).

Leroy is amazing. He's had a rough ride, was raised an aviary bird and came to me with some of his feathers damaged. We made HUGE progress though, and he is really starting to trust and like us. He knows how to step up, is comfortable with showering, will allow us to cuddle with him sometimes and has started imitating some of the sounds Ive taught Stitch.

Leroy is an amazingly gentle parrot. He is careful, thoughtful and friendly.
He has actually only ever bitten me ONCE, and that was when he got stuck in a lamp, and I had to wriggle him out. Even though I was saving him, he thought I was the cause of the hurt and reacted thus. Other than that, never.

He's started to learn tricks, and we are working with taming excersises. He knows flight recall, step up and turn around. He doesnt fly as well as Stitch does though, doing rougher landings and miscalculations sometimes. He's molted recently though and its getting a lot better =).

He is also very quiet unless spooked, and I dearly reccommend pionuses, they are such sweet natured birds!

Hope that helped!

Fun thread we got here.

So, I guess I'm probably the only owner of a Greater Vasa Parrot on these forums (since I haven't seen another yet).....

Here's Chocobo my 2 year old:

These parrots are pretty rare to own in the U.S. .... mainly because of the laws that came into place from Madagascar way back when. Now, the only way to get them is through a breeder, which would probably have a 2 year wait list and these parrots only mate once a year.... so.... you can imagine how long it would take. (I guess I was extremely fortunate to know a lady who had connections and bumped me to the top of the list somehow)

Re: An uncommon parrot? Cherry Headed Conure

The CHC used to be fairly common in the pet bird trade but after 1993 in the USA it was illegal to import wild caught so, they are not so common now except for the wild flocks. In fact, i know more people who own greys than CHC. I also own a Meyer's.
