Housing Caiques together?

Postby Pomlover2586 » Sun Jul 01, 2012 5:05 pm

A local bird store I know has 2 baby Black Headed Caiques that will be available soon. they are both super cute and friendly- but both are female. Iago is a male WBC and so i worry about aggression (he is 2 years old) as well as eventual mating.......first off I don't want mating, and second I'd end up with hybrids which could be unhealthy.

Is it even possible to keep opposite genders together without breeding, or without severe personality changes occuring?

What would be the method to use for introductions? If i got another I'd like to house them together....

All of this is just food for thought at the moment- Hubby sounds like twice the noise would be an issue for him.....so definitely not jumping into anything.

Thoughts? :caique: :bcaique:
Iago- WBC
Zazu- BHC

I had that thought too. My first caique Greta was a year old and I wanted to get another[not for breeding]I was going to get a WBC but couldnt resist this blk hd one.So we got Sammer .I have separate cages but thought I would start having them out together and see how it went. They would preen each other ,then Greta would get to rough[she would bite him].Their cages are next to each other[they like that! :D Its cute they mirror each other, they eat at the same time, play with toys and sleep facing each other. Also it has not changed my relationship at all,I think the only way I would keep them in the same cage is if they were both baby cagemates.Hey you could get both :D That would be fun.Though all situtions can be different.I think WBC are more laid back and the blk hds are devils :D As for the breeding question .A male and Female can be together just no nesting materials and watch how you handle them during the season.I think he would like a friend. :D

Greta would get to rough[she would bite him].

She is showing her dominance to the new arrival. She needs to let it know who is in charge and gets first attention.

No nesting material has worked with my flock of tiels.
