Parrots like Senegal?

Postby Nir » Sun Jul 22, 2012 4:52 pm

I am deciding on which parrot to buy and so far Senegal fits what I am looking for. He is supposedly playful, quiet( I live in apt), decent talker, smaller in size compared to other parrots, and isn't as prone to be a feather plucker. But are there are similar birds like a Senegal that I should consider that others prefer? If there was a bird similar to it but was a better talker that would be great. But since I live in apt, he can't be louder then senegal.

Visit an Avian Rescue. Not only will you learn the species but the individual personality.

I know you said you wouldn't hate a bird for not talking but may I ask exactly why a talking bird is so high up on your preference list?
Just curious so I hope you don't think I'm being rude.

liz is right a rescue is the way to go.advantages are they've already been around other birds so you know if they will get along with your budgie.they already have likes and dislikes so no guessing there.you don't have to worry what they're going to turn into when maturity hits, which is when most people give up their birds cause the cute sweet baby they bought turned into a hormonal teen.the rescue can find you a bird that's quiet enough for an apartment.mya :corella: came to me from a rescue and i couldn't ask for a better fit in my home she even came potty trained
they can find you a talker with a baby the bird might never talk.

its not high at all. highest on my preference is actually friendliness and a bird thats more easy to tame and less bity. But if i can find a similar bird that fits those criterias but can also talk better, thats just a plus. So its not a big deal. But i cant lie that it would be amazing if he talked. like hearing your kids first word. But if he cant talk there would be no dissapointment since friendliness is more important. I JUST DONT want a bird that is MORE LIKELY to be agressive and bity. I will give him a lot of time and train/tame him but i dont want a bird that has a reputation to be very hard to tame or has more chances of being out of control. (yes i know every bird can get out of control and that every bird within a certain species will have different personalities so a species thats known to be quiet can be loud and bitchy and a species known to talk like african grey might never talk).

Young birds are nippy and it does hurt .Theres a difference between bites and nips.[Its going to happen] A rescue might give you a few bites to see where it wants to stand with you.Bites dont happen forever but its up to you to teach them and learn that maybe they dont want to be held by you right now! :D

I have a :senegal: and even though he is very well socialized he does scream when I get home or whenever someone visits. He will also do a locator scream when I leave the room. All screams are ignored i.e. not enforced with vocal or non-vocal rewards. That being said I dont know if ANY parrot is good for an apartment type scenario. I am not trying to discourage you but dont want you to end up getting a bird and then having to re-home due to noise issues. Also bites will occur with senegals....they have a very fast fight/flight response and you will be bit. Obviously this can be avoided through methods detailed in several threads in this forum but you should be aware of all of the realities beforehand.

Hope this helps,

Wayne

That being said I dont know if ANY parrot is good for an apartment type scenario.

I'd say it depends. Ive got a white fronted amazon, a species known for screaming, and so far its no problem (knock on woood). The only scream he had we've replaced with a wolf whistle which is his contact call.

The only time our two parrots scream are if they get into a fight with each other or annoy the other one too much. Other than that they are quiet, and tbh its no worse than a dog barking when they get at screaming.

That said, this isnt the case with all parrots, its down to individual birds.

I agree 100 percent BUT how is the OP supposed to know if the parrot will be quiet or loud before owning said bird for a period of time? That is the problem..... I know the OP can go to rescues or pet stores and observe but this does not give an indication of the birds behaviour in his appartment environment. I am not trying to be argumentative in the least....just concerned that he is playing a game of chance and the bird is going to be the one who suffers if he doesnt get a quiet one.

I agree with you completely, I posted as I did because Im tired of postings where its bluntly stated "Parrots are not for apartments". I merely want to make it clear that it can work.

Of course, there are species less prone to high noises, which might be a better "gamble" with better odds for apartments.

I really think the OP, Nir, should visit breeders and rescues to get an idea what he is getting into. Parrots scream and bite ^^!
