Pionus

I'm getting curious. I find it hard to amass much information on pionus parrots in the internet and I'm hoping some owners can tell me about them. I just want to now what kind of birds they are and what the owners here think of them, they just do not seem so popular and it would be nice just to know a few things about them in one thread.

I met one and talked with his owner. A Maximilian pionus. He was very quiet and not demanding. The owner said he was very rarely made noise and didn't spook easily. He was sweet and friendly. Due to their diet their beaks are not strong and even when angry won't hurt you as badly as much smaller birds. They are even tempered and charming in a quiet calm way. :)

I can confirm all of the above fits our bronze winged pionus as well. He is supersweet, intelligent and a great parrot all in all. To me it seems "the general consensus" and generalisations about pionus are quite true, at least from my personal experience with one, and having read about dozens and talked to breeders and owners.
They are very good natured, calm, intelligent and quiet parrots!

There's a thread in which biting and agression is a huge deal atm, and this is my personal experience with this and our bronze winged pionus:
He has only bitten me ONCE when he got stuck in a lamp, and that was from being very very frightened. Thats once in 7 months. He is very easy to read, and you know what he thinks ^^.
Its a world of a difference in comparision to our amazon, even though we work on aggression with him everyday.

I found a pionus forum a while back and everyone there seemed to feel the same way!

It's a shame that so many people go for harder-to-manage birds and then find themselves in a stressful situation, instead of getting a smaller, more easily readable and gentler bird and enjoying bonding.
