Senegal vs red bellied?

Postby Nir » Mon Aug 06, 2012 1:45 pm

Anyone own a red bellied? How do they compare? Any reason to prefer a red bellied over Senegal or Senegal over red bellied? Looks, price, talking abilities aren't important. Who has a more passive temperament? Who is quieter. Who is cuddlier? Who is more sociable and friendlier( less of a 1 person bird)..

well not dead set but poi seems like the right family for me since i want quieter medium sized birds who are cuddly and playful.

I've read all of your threads, and replied a couple of times I think. You seem to be someone who can do ALOT of research when you get interested in something, how come you've gotten stuck with the idea of a Poi, rather than researching different kinds of parrots and then deciding on what you think would be the best?

Even though the Pois might be one of the most bought larger parrot types in the US (I dont know if it is, just feels like there's a lot of sennies out there), its far from the only group of parrot species available ^^.
I definetely like them as well, I was looking into getting a Meyers when I started looking for parrots, but ended up with something completely different ;).

Not to open this topic up yet again, but I thought you were not getting another bird?

Ive heard the red-bellieds to be less confrontational then sennies, but a poi is still a poi and the old world birds are in general are intolerant of other birds etc. Which you have stated is an issue with your budgies and the fact that you may settle down in the years to come.

Senegals are not that quiet. Maybe quieter than an Amazon or Macaw or the like, but I definitely expected "quieter" to mean not talking all the time, or beeping and peeping cheerily. I'm actually fine with her noise BUT don't be deceived! Also when she screams (which is rarely when I'm around) it is ear splitting and she does scream when I'm not there. Although, I do live in an apartment and my neighbors don't seem to hear her or be bothered by her. My (currently unemployed) roommate does however, but she won't be unemployed for long so no big deal.

Although she is extremely playful, intelligent, and cute. Not cuddly yet (not sure if they even are..?).

CML:

I actually have done similar research on other birds on my own. And i am mean practically every bird in existence. However i narrowed it down to the poi family (and timneh) because They seemed like the right fit. But perhaps i overlooked some birds. Please suggest other birds that you think i should consider but keep in mind that he needs to be as quiet as poi's because i live in an apt. Also i prefer a cuddlier medium sized birds who are active. What bird did you end up getting? I always like opinions of the owners of the birds to get a bigger picture of what to expect.

I am not for the time being but i know that in the future i definitely will hopefully when i get e bigger place sometime down the line. So i dont think i will ever stop doing research.

Also this is more of a red bellied thread since there is already a lot of info about Senegal in the other threads.

Why not a brown headed parrot or a cape parrot? I think they are classified as the more cuddly pois.
Also, this breeder http://www.africanqueenaviaries.com/index.html is pretty reputable, for all your poi desires :D

If you don't want a 1 person bird, why are you going for pois?

brown headed is going to be hard to find near NYC and as far as i know, they are also high in the chart of 1 person birds so there inst much positive i see with them. Cape parrot is actually very lovely since i met Michaels cape, however they are a bit bigger and pricier then i am looking for. And i doubt i can even find any here near ny along with the brown headed.

The other positives of pois make up for the bird possibly being a 1 person bird(even though i kinda like the idea of my parrot liking me the most but i just have to teach him to tolerate others to an extent). I will try to reduce the one person birdness by socializing. Like i said if there are other birds that might fit the bill , please recommend and i can research on them.

also i am aware of the sennies screams but i am going to be ok with that.

ps: florida is kinda far from nyc :).

the place i found that seems very good is a breeder in long island called parrot co. They were very clean and friendly and it seemed like they all socialize with their birds since every person there were socializing with all the birds. But i am still looking for other breeders but the problem is that there really arent any around here. I got my handfed budgie from a place in nj that was 2.5 hours away and even though that place was huge and looked fine, this one just seems better because of the smaller size and it looks like the birds here all get plenty of attention from the people there and are well taken care of.
