Our new Amazon parrot

Postby dawnkyung » Wed Aug 08, 2012 8:29 am

Hello everyone -

We recently brought home a 5 month old Amazon parrot - sold to us as a Yellow-Crown. Numerous people (online) have told me that he looks more like a yellow-nape, although he did go in for a vet wellness check and the vet told me that he is a yellow crown. Just curious as to your thoughts!

Introducing Banner. :)

I think you have a yellow crowned, I'm no good with amazon species really but from what I gather crown it top of the head and nape is to do with the neck. If you google the two different species the yellow naped seems to have yellow on the back of the neck which yours doesn't from what I can see.

I could be wrong and my reasoning could be totally wrong too but that is what makes sense to me from looking at the pictures and the meaning of crown and nape, just cuz it sounds logical doesn't mean it is lol.

Whatever your bird is I hope he settles into life with you quickly.

Thanks for the reply!

Yeah, I did google a bunch of photos and I know that certainly the yellow-napes are known for having, well, a yellow nape... but a few people that breed yellow napes posted photos of young birds who have no yellow feathers on their napes yet! So, that made me wonder.

In that case you may have to wait until hes moulted until you know for sure. Other people may know of other ways to tell so you will hopefully get more replies. Like I say I'm not good at all with amazon species but I've not made the effort to get to know either so I was just putting 2 and 2 together really. :)

I might start off with saying that I'm not 100% sure, well I'm pretty sure yellow nape amazons doesn't have yellow necks when their babies, however I'm also pretty sure they do not possess the yellow crown neither. So what I'm saying is that I'm pretty sure you got a crowned fella.

What a beautiful baby! He looks like a yellow crown. He will get many more yellow feathers on his forehead as he molts. A yellow naped amazon will get yellow on the back of its neck after it molts. They normally don't show any yellow on their napes until the first molt. I don't ever remember seeing a yellow naped amazon with any yellow feathers on its forehead.
