Fantasy Parrot Team

Postby trueloveway » Sun Aug 26, 2012 11:16 am

I was just curious about other parrots. In reality, Jack would be a broken-hearted little Senegal if I got another one (just a mother's intuition) but I always wondered about bigger species , especially U2's and macaws. Generally what is life like with bigger parrots? Again, this is just out of curiosity, Jack is my only baby and we both plan to keep it that way :D

Absolutely love the bigger species.I used to be very afraid of them but had a face your fear year and did it !! The bigger species seem to me more human like .They harmonize well with my family.I want to point out that I think Im in the right time in my life to have them.So if your thinking of this someday consider this.Im established in my career[for income] own my own home [plenty of room and no noise issues] My kids are 9 and 12 [they help me,wonderful experiences for them] I hear having birds then having kids [newborns]can create lots of jealousy issues.Im in a commited relationship. Dave loves them just as much as I do.Birds know when you dont like them.I have tried to learn everything I can [and still am] to ward off plucking ,screaming ,biting issues and their well being .I do believe that you should have bird experience before looking into the bigger species.Even though I think we all have birds species that we would love to have.I know that the best way is to take your time[they are going to be around awhile ] check out everyone that interests you and let them choose you [thats how I have so many birds].Also Im a true believer in schedules for them [it works :D ] Theres alot of negative portrayels of them [and thats all you seem to see] but if your in the right time in your life I would honestly say its not something you would want to miss out on .So something to think about for the future :D

The big guys really make you think about whether or not its ok to keep parrots in captivity at all, and certainly as your average 'pet'.

As terri said---they're very human-like and very intelligent.
Parrot people always toss around the 'its like a toddler for the next 60 years line'. The big birds make this absolutely true---the smaller birds are intelligent but...there's a certain something that the big birds have.

Jacko is my daughter, not my pet bird for that reason. If I could find birdie daycare for her I would.

Terri, it's funny you say that because I do think about that a LOT. I always want what's best for the bird, too, because I want to be fair to them. Jack is my little buddy and of course I want to love him. (read-spoil him rotten) If I got another bird, I know he wouldn't take it well. My dad got two budgies and Mr. Senegal was not impressed. He truly is a one-person bird. Also, I do want a bigger bird eventually (you have a hawkhead and they intrigue me so much!) but not until I'm ready. Parrots are a huge commitment, and I want to dedicate the time required. :D

Say hi to Jacko for me :D I really do look at my Sennie as part of my family, and not just a pet. When I say that to some people, they give me crazy looks lol

I would love a blue and gold macaw, a galah, a quaker, a caique, a grey and alot more besides but that will never happen as I will never have time to take care of so many super intelligent species, never mind the space and money.

I'm also finding myself getting increasingly uncomfortable with the whole pet trade the more I learn if I'm honest. To most people in the pet trade, money is the only important factor, so sad but very true that they don't care about genetics, health, psychological health etc. Although I think I will always keep some species of parrot I'm agreeing with grey moon more and more that some species should not be kept in captivity, particuarly not as pets (not just birds). You could call me a hyprocite as I got Ollie from a breeder but I think my future will lie more with helping the victims of human mistakes and selfishness than encouraging the factory line type breeding of animals.

I am very selfish in a way too because I never imagine that my animals should be free and never should have been in captivity although I know that is the truth. I see them as mine, I couldn't be without them, I have grown up in a world that sees it as ok to interfere with nature and take them prisoner for our own gains as has everyone else. Its just when you start looking deeper and deeper you start questioning if it really is as ok as we are led to believe, especially with the more intelligent creatures, the ones that have large territories etc.....

and this is WHY i wanted a bigger parrot to begin with because of its more human like features. Didnt no how to describe it back then but this fits. And by bigger i just mean medium sized since in most cases the medium sized parrots will be more human like then the small ones.

I think more than one bird is a good thing [I always say this ,they have someone to chit chat with].AND NO IM NOT SAYING 9 BIRDS] Alot of my birds are never going to be play stand friends but I think they enjoy each others company.I can have mine all out on seperate stands and things. But not the LORY he will fly and try to attack everyone. But hes great out by himself. My [hawkhead ] Charlotte is a very unique bird.Shes one of the ones that I felt a click with when I was picking out a bird [I knew nothing about them] I thought I was going to get a Eclectus.Charlotte was one of the ones who did not go through a nipping stage[besides Harlow] and check out her beak [she could get you if she wanted to.]Shes very gentle [likes my kids] shes a little shy just has to get to know you. When she does talk its the clearest of them. She wants to play with you on her back, likes her one on one time with you.Can be demanding lots of yelling step up [to come out ] when I get home. :D

Aw she sounds adorable! I would love a gentle birdy that I feel safe with other people around.

Don't know if this counts as a "big" bird, but I have a medium SC2 :cockatoo: who I've had for a little bit now, and is still very young ... but the intelligence and personality with that bird is amazing. He's not just a pet. I've known since hatch date {april 7th ;) } , and he's like my son.

But while the bigger species are crazy awesome and so amazing...don't lose interest in your little baby! :3 Not that you are, just appreciate yours. I take out my tiny little tiel as much as my big birdie, and I love her just as much, if not more with the 'too in the house. There are so many things that little birds have that big birds just don't! Each bird is unique.
