Can Kakariki's breed/mate with Conures?

Postby Kinny » Tue Sep 11, 2012 2:32 am

I have a 4 month old Male Kakariki who has just recently become sexually mature, and a 1 year old Female Jenday Conure, who for the past week have been cuddling, cleaning each other, spending each night in a small box together.. My Kakariki 'Muta' did a sort of mating dance infront of her today and they've been practically glued to each otehr sides all day today since that little dance...

My question is... Can Kakariki's and Conures actually mate/breed?

no they can't breed. but the box can cause egg laying with your female i would get rid of the box. my :corella: had a cat hut she liked to play in but it caused her to lay an egg so i took it away since sometimes eggs can get stuck i don't want anything to encourage it.my mother actually got excited when i told her mya laid an egg since i have a male :gcc: she wondered what would hatch until i explained to her it doesn't work that way.

No they cannot breed.

I would keep your Jenday away from your kakariki though. They may get on but the size difference means if they ever did bicker, even for a second your kakariki would die or become severely injured. Conures aren't known for being the most gentle birds even though they certainly can be.

**EDIT**

The kaks are so so tiny and your conure hasn't even reached the terrible twos yet. It would be very rare for a parrot to get through that period without a moment (or 100's of moments) of aggression. They can't control their hormones any more than we can, although we have the morals (usually) to walk away when we know something isn't right, birds only have instinct.

My Conure is actually the same size as the Kakariki, if not a tiny bit smaller.. She's a bit underdeveloped. They get along fabulously and so fights are highly unlikely between the 2 of them.. but yeah, I understand the hormones. Thank you very much for your input. :)

Sounds like alot underdeveloped, even my green cheek is alot bigger than a kak and Jendays are a fair bit bigger than the GCC. Any ideas what has caused that to happen?
Well its up to you but I wouldn't take the chance of letting them be too close given a conures nature, at least you are aware of the potential.

Yeah. My kakariki is a nice fat size haha. About the same size of my previous Green Cheek. But yes, my Jenday 'Kioko' is quite underdeveloped. I remember when I picked her up I thought she was a baby, she was so TINY! But I've had her on VetaFarm Maintenance Pellets, fresh fruit & veggies, a bit of mixed seed etc. and she's grown a little since then... which I find odd...as she is over a year old now.. She has Scissor-beak also. I rescued her as my taming project, and she's doing MUCH better now. I think it was dietary... and she looks like she's been attacked. She has a little almost bald patch on her head and 'gunk' keeps 'gluing' all the feathers together. Vets don't know what it is either. Mm I've taken the Box away from the Jenday. It's only Muta's property now. Gosh he loves that box.. ^^
