Potential new bird

Postby mmiller10001 » Thu Oct 04, 2012 7:16 pm

Hi everyone. I currently have a cockatiel named Popcorn. She is 11 years old and a wonderful girl. I have in the past had many parakeets. I adopted a sweet bird I named Pebbles about 6 months ago. She got along well with my Popcorn and fit well into the house hold. She had been abandoned in a box on the rescue's porch so I had know idea how old she was (or even if she was a she). Sadly on Tuesday I woke up to find her feathers fluffed and not doing well. She had seemed normal the night before and was eating normally, but looking at her closer she had a large bulge on her abdomen. I took her to the vet and we found a tumor and the abdomen had filled with fluid. We were going to try some lasix and herbal treatment and see what happened but when they put her under anestisthia to x-ray and drain the abdomen she did not recover and after being on the oxygen her heart stopped. It's crazy how much you can miss a bird you've had for a few months, but I do miss her a lot.

Anyway, now to my quandry! At some point, I would like to adopt another bird. My first though was cockatiel as Popcorn seemed to like having a cage mate. But for the first time in my life I am "settled" if you will, and know (with as much certainty as anyone could) that I am staying where I am for a good long time. Unfortunately at the moment my brother is living with me and he has chronic migrains. He has never been bothered by my cockatiels or parakeets but I know having a larger bird usually = louder. I am not currently looking into anything like a cockatoo or amazon sized bird. More like conure. I have heard good things about blue crowned conures. They seem to have the smart, cuddly but playful attitude I would love but are "quieter" than most other conures. How true is this? I'm in the zookeeping field and I full understand the need to keep parrots entertained, but even entertained sun conures are known to screech a lot. Are the blue crowns quieter and less like to screech a lot? There are a few up for adoption in my area who are a little older (10-20 year olds). Anyone have any comments on their personality and noise level. I do have my other bird and 3 dogs so I need a bird who is less likely to get jealous of others getting attention.`

Same question goes for quaker parrots or any other suggestions people may have.

if you're looking at rescues contact the people who work with the birds.the best part of a rescue is you know exactly what you're in for. they're not trying to sell you a bird that will come back so they can tell you if it's a screamer and how loud it can get.if my :gcc: has an off day he can come close to my :corella:.
