Lovebirds?

Postby Eurycerus » Fri Oct 05, 2012 5:24 pm

I haven't run this by my roommate but there are a few lovebirds coming in that need foster homes. I have only taken care of a pair of completely untamed lovebirds before. I don't know much about them. I thought maybe I could take the single (there're two pairs and a single).

What are people's experience with lovebirds? How loud/destructive are they? How strong is their bite? Do they respond well to hand taming?

Keep in mind I have a Senegal but they won't be out at the same time and I'll be interacting with the lovebird in a separate but visible area of the apartment. My roommate probably won't go for this but I wanted to do research just in case.

My mom has two lovies and well I never consider them loud to be honest, When my mom got hers however I know someone tried to sell her another type of bird because they wern't as loud as lovies... but nah not loud. As for the bite... I dont really know how hard they bite, they has never bit me, or anyone else here... but I'd assume it wont even be close to a sennies bite, so wouldn't worry about that :)

About taking on a pair or a single... their quite lovable, and loving... so there is a greater risk I beleive that you will get overly bonded with a single or the single will try bond with your sennie. But I am definitly not sure I've never seen a lovie kept as a single (well I've seen it through the web, but I know of noone keeping a single lovie, and the petstore I buy a lot of supplies from actually doesnt sell them as singles, unless you have a single already for any kind of reason. And even then they prefer to quarantine it into a flock and see who it's bonding with, but not allowed this they will make sure they have a lovie that is not bonded with anyone yet before they sell you one...

Anyways seeing how you want to foster and not adopt I'd be cautious about bonding too much, so personally i'd prolly go for the pair.

Tbh unless you have a completely seperate area which can't be seen then I wouldn't do it because you have only just got your sennie to settle down a bit (I think it was you?) and I wouldn't want to risk upsetting everything again. All would probably be fine if it was only for a week but the reality is the lovebird could be waiting to be adopted by a good enough home for months rather than weeks.

It may all be fine but are you willing to deal with everything seeming impossible again if it isn't?

Yeah, I have to agree with Marie. I mean it's a very good and gracious thing to do, to foster for the lovebirds... bless your heart, really... but I can't help fearing for you how Nika would take to this. Ask yourself if she is really ready for this change? I mean if she attacked your partner recently when you walked into the room, imagine how much more possessive and jealous she'll be when she sees you spend some of HER time with other birds. It's your call of course but I'm anticipating some not-good responses to this from Nika.

Are they really? You wouldn't think so, from name alone ;)

Lovebirds make great companion birds. They aren't too loud, although can give out a loud chirp like any parrot. My experience with them is that if they aren't hand fed from hatching, they aren't the easiest to tame. It can be done but not as easily as a parakeet or cockatiel. One will bond well with its human but 2 together usually bond to each other instead of you. Even if not hand tame they are still a riot to watch and very beautiful!
