Parrot to free-flight with Budgie (and train much)

Postby LiaraTivona » Fri Oct 12, 2012 6:36 pm

This question has been resolved.

Can't keep medium birds and budgies out together for sure!

It is theoretically possible to keep a budgie in a Poi under the right circumstances but assume that they will be two entirely independent bird project simultaneously rather than companions. More than likely you would have to take them out separately and ensure that the bird that isn't out is in a cage in a DIFFERENT room. You can't take a chance of one bird landing on the others cage and losing a foot through the bars. So if it's something you really want to undertake and have the means for it, you can look into what it takes to do that. However, do not in any way look at it as a companion for budgie or that two birds will be the same amount of work as one.

I guess that's a no then because our house is basically one big room except for the walk-in closet (which is like a small bedroom but no windows) and the bathtub. Its this custom-built house... even the bedroom is really just a nook with a room divider. :(

I just feel a little sad because I see what people do with their other parrots and it makes me jealous. I'd love to scratch my birds rather than the stinky chickens on the farm I work at... and I love how they do things with their feet and be such great companions to humans...

The only kinds of parrots that seem to be compatible (but not always) with budgies are cockatiels and other budgies. Even though they are similar in size, parotlets, lovebirds, and green cheek conures aren't likely compatible. If my Senegal can be such a bully to a much larger parrot, she would be merciless with a smaller one. Not a good match.

As Michael said tiels are quite commonly compatible, but they too does not use their feet much. Even being housed together usually works if their given a big enough cage and proper introductions . But as with any birds there are nice guarantees. I've quite recently have had to separate my flock making sure their in different rooms couse my budgie is a bully and will bite the tailfeathers of the others unless their willing to play with her. . So for her safety since I don't want any of the bigger birds to give a bite back .

Patrick used to make the prettiest sounds trying to woo Tika, and when she would respond to him he'd go to her cage and she'd bite his toes. He kept trying though!

The red-belly owner said to put a piece of acrylic on the top of the cage, but even Robert knew that was a silly idea: most often the birds land on the sides of the cage, not the top, and they climb all over the outsides.

I just hope we can find a budgie for adoption that is remarkably tame and something along the lines of cuddly. Not likely but I can dream =P

:budgie:

There was also this small pink bird I saw one time at a parrot rescue, looked like the budgies it was housed with but it was called something different and they said it was from South America. I'm sure I wouldn't find one in a rescue though.

I watched Wiki's training videos (I had already watched Duke's) and I am revamped on my desire to have another budgie. I know having two will take away from training but my primary goal is for them to be happy, and just as with my goats I feel they are happier as two even if less interested in human attention.

Plus they chatter so prettily together... =)

I take it as my mission to have some awesome, happy little budgies that I can show my guests and inspire a revolution in budgie care where owners treat their birds as well as their dogs, not their fish! Viva la revolution!

There is also a rosy Bourke parakeet for adoption. Not sure anything about them...

And then there are Linnie's to consider too! Oh my.

Well, if I stick with adoption rather than bird-breeder I guess my choices are limited so I don't have to worry. Besides, someone already mentioned that budgies don't seem to get along with parrots of similar size.
