Need advice on Conures !!

Postby Snoopy_the cockatiel » Mon Oct 22, 2012 3:12 am

Hey all,

I have a lutino cockatiel currently and I am planning to take a conure soon.Since my cockatiel got sick recently,it changed my mind.I was worried of taking the risk of owning a new bird.If anything happens to the bird,I can't forgive myself. As you all know, its a big responsibility to take care of a bird. But still I have a craze towards conures. It will take sometime for me to decide as to have a conure or not.
I just want to know some information about them. Can I have a single :sun: or is it best to have it as a pair? Are they very loud and will they get along with tiels? Any additional information would be appreciated.

I got my first conure in April.Shes a sun conure [I was ready for her to be very loud and shes really quiet]. [Im sure all birds vary].Shes comming out of her hard nipping stage [thank god].Gingee is alot of fun,she wants to play with lots of toys ,hang upside down and swing. Also Im impressed she seems to like a bigger variety of food than the rest of my birds :D You can see how smart they are if you put the time into them.

Are you only interested in the sun conures?
Most conures are bullies and will harass a cockatiel, even birds bigger than them so it is likely you will need to have seperate out times. I only have my gcc and 'tiel out at the same time if I literally never take my eyes off of them, or my partner will have Ollie one side of the room and I will have Harlie at the other side.

If you're looking at sunnies, I recommend peeking at Jendays as well. (or Jendaya Conures). They're very similar, except I personally prefer the noise they make, their appearance, and of the handful I've met, the personality by a lot. ;) All conures are amazing though. I also reccommend checking out Nanday conures, I hear so much good stuff about those buddies! And Blue crowns.

As for GCC's...you're asking for a lot of personality! My GCC bullies anything and everything, including my :cockatoo: and some large dogs!

Life's tough when none of your birdies get a long. :|

My white eared conure is quite mean to other birds, although he is an attention whore/angel around humans. When he was a baby, he had to be removed from the cage with the other baby conures. Apparently, white eared conures are just like that.

However, my green cheeked conure is very friendly, sweet, and passive toward other birds. He's shy around certain humans, but still wants to be held close to them (he bounces up and down on my finger until I carry him near the new people, at which point he puffs up and starts mumbling excitedly like he's trying to join our conversation).

I think it really depends on the individual bird's personality. They're all so different. One might be an angel around people and a terror to birds, one might be more cautious around people and nice to other birds. You would have to try introducing them to really know how it's going to go.

On that note, I think conures are pretty quiet compared to budgies when you think about how much actual time they spend vocalizing. It's just that when they do, it's a lot louder! They are also more emotionally complicated and anxious if they aren't given the right environment and attention, in my experience.

I have a 2.5 year old Jenday (Jackson) and he is a bit of a squaker, but that is usually just when we get home from work or in the morning when he wants his attention. I have a 4 year old son and 7 year old daughter and they are both very good with him. Jackson has really taken a liking to my 4 year old and likes to sit on his shoulder. He is also very good with my wife.

Jackson is my 2nd conure as I had a Nanday conure, which I hand fed. From my experience with conures, once these birds bond with you they are the sweetest animals. Conures do require a lot of interaction and ideally need several hours of attention each day.

Jackson loves his cuddle time and is not a biter, but he can get very defensive when people come over he doesn't know, and has bitten people, so we are very careful about that. I guess he is just tyring to protect his turf. I don't know how your cockatiel would interact with a conure, but they would most likely some time to get used to one another.

Other than that, I have done some simple trick training (praise and reward) with him and he picks tricks up very quickly. Honestly I couldn't ask for a better friend.
