Help deciding....

Postby Ripkabird98 » Tue Nov 20, 2012 2:40 pm

I need help deciding what kind of Parrot to get. I already have several as you can see.

I am wanting a Cuddly bird that isn't hyper all of the time. My IRN can't sit still for his life. My Cockatiels like to be WITH me, but not touched. My CAG was beaten and everything, so he likes to sit on our lap, be kissed, but thats it. My Parakeets.... well.. they are Parakeets.

I want one that is largER. I used to have a GCC :gcc: and we were Inseparable. A tragedy happened, and he is no longer with us. I want his cuddly attitude in a larger bird. I always felt so dangerous to him. But I don't want something as huge as, say, a Mollucan Cockatoo.

Noise matters to an EXTENT. My CAG screams and shrills, and I HAVE heard an angry Cockatoo. I don't want something along the lines of "Holy crap my ears are bleeding", but I can take Moderate noise, and for sure even the lower end of noisy.

Suggestions?

If you're not having success or getting what you want from the extensive array of parrots you already own, then you won't no matter what you get. Your approach is more likely at fault than the species you own. Consider revising your approach for success rather than continuing to get more parrots.

I politely disagree.

I have worked CORRECTLY, and very hard with what I have.

One of my Cockatiels was beaten as well. Between being rescues, and having THEIR OWN PERSONALITY, they just aren't cuddly birds. If someone is nice to you, but you don't act the way they want, that doesn't mean them acting different will change your reactions. Some birds just don't Cuddle. My IRN is very sweet, and he DOES love me- he just wants to run all over like a hyped up squirrel.

Without meaning to sound rude but you already have 7 birds, are you absolutey sure you have enough time to take on an 8th?

If you get a bird that is supposed to be cuddly but then it turns out it isn't, what then? Are you planning on getting a 9th or 10th bird? If your new bird doesn't get on with your other birds or vice versa do you have time to give them a large amount of seperate out times without taking too much away from your existing birds? Again without trying to be rude it sounds like you are wanting to get another bird to fullfill your own desires, not saying this is true but it is hard to "read" text if you know what I mean. Really it should be the other way round.

I would think carefully (I'm sure you already are) because if your current flock is currently working well together then it can only take one new addition to completely destroy that structure.

Based on what birds you already have I think your going to have a hard time finding a medium sized species which has a higher probability of fitting in well. I would suggest having a good look for rescues as their caretakers will already have a good idea of a birds personality- whether they are cuddlers, agressive to other birds etc- not all of them are troubled birds, given up because their owners cant cope or abused/neglected.

Take your time with this, it is a big decision. I've been extremely lucky with adding new birds to my flock over the years and haven't always gone about doing things in the correct manner, it could so easily been a complete disaster.

Just because the species of bird is known to be cuddly doesn't mean you will necessarily get one that wants to be cuddled. You could try some taming exercises with your other birds so that they will want to cuddle.. I bet Micheal has a video on it ;)

What's your method for approaching a parrot for cuddles? My first bird was a budgie and I had no problem getting him to cuddle.

Do you approach their beak first and let their head feathers fluff before touching them? Most parrots don't like their backs, wings, and chest cuddled as much as they like their heads scratched. A lot of people try to stroke their chests and backs first and that's a huge mistake. You have to start with gently touching around their beak. Get to the point that when you put your finger close to their head, they puff their head in welcoming and lean forward for a scratch. I haven't had one parrot that didn't love cuddles and as I said, that includes a budgie.

I would be very surprised if you couldn't get one of your seven to cuddle. If they step up, you can do it.

If you have 7 birds alReady and none are cuddly then I think the problem lies more on the training. Maybe you need to handl, train more . But if you really do want a New bird with a bigger chance of being cuddly then perhaps a gcc would be best. Cockatoos are another choice but they are very hard to manage and will be very loud so gcc might be the best bet.
