It sounds like its all just happening too fast for him.
the snapping through the bars at your hands and the beak banging are signs of stress-related aggression.

for now, in my opinion, i think the best you can do is to do the following for the next few days: set up a regular routine in your household. play soft rock music at a soft volume in the room where he's caged, so he can hear singing voices during the day. give him a regular bedtime and wake time. leave him in his cage, but pull up a chair about three feet away and read softly outloud, several times a day, without making eye contact. for the rest of the day, just ignore him, don't make eye contact. don't bring your hands toward his cage. keep a distance of at least three feet from his cage. in my opinion, i don't think he's ready for in-the-cage training yet. other forum members may feel differently.

try this for at least a few days - that would be my advice. not sure what the other forum members think about doing this, but this is what has worked for me in the past with stressed out, aggressive birds.

after a few days, assess where his calmness level is. hopefully it should have improved...

hope that helps - let us know how it goes, and good luck! :)

Agree with the above post, I don't think its because he is angry he cant come out.
I also absolutely agree with the chair thing, you can adjust the distance as appropriate though, the chair needs to be at the closest point to the cage where you dont get the reaction your currently getting.
For now, let him decide how close he wants you to get, gradually you will be able to get closer and closer until you can feed him the treats without having to wait for him to calm down.

+1 . when you've reached the stage of calmness that marie describes above, THEN do the following:

DONT let him out until you got this down, as you will want a secure and non-threatening way of putting your parrot back in the cage, which isnt going to send negative signals to your new friend. This is very important.

all the best :)

First of all.... Thank you!!! I appreciate the feed back. I am able to go right up to him in his cage and talk to him with out him reacting aggressively. If I ask him if he's a good boy, he will shake his head up & down and I give him a treat. That part is fine. Its when I physically and intentionally put my hand to his cage. Then he will go to the door and it looks like he is trying to break out by biting the cage bars, and also between them. So I should just keep gaining his trust by talking to him and not push anything else for now, right?

When he's a bit calmer, point the targeting stick through the bars, and target train him by that. You dont have to put your hand into the cage to start with ;).

Exactly this that cml wrote.

by the sounds of it you wont have a problem getting him to touch the target so you can reward him. He may be nervous of it to start with so bring it near to the cage slowly to start with to see how he reacts to it outside before you put it through the bars.

How has your progress been with Mango? I also have a re-homed jenday named mango who is three years old who I have been taming (he was a former breeder).
