Squawking Senegal

Postby Smurph007 » Tue Sep 02, 2014 5:46 pm

Hello,
My Senegal Sprite is very social and loves to talk and chirp. However, she has a really loud high pitched squawk she does when she's not getting attention. For example if we are walking in and out of the house... I have been ignoring this sound and responding when she is quiet or makes a better sounding chirp but that doesn't seem to be helping... What else can I do to get the squawking to stop?!
Thanks,
Sarah :senegal:

My Senegal has the same squawk, although I don't have to listen to it that often. If she gets enough attention then she will not squawk that much.

Yep, same here, they do have this high-pitched, eardrum-splitting loud scream but mine hardly ever do it. I am home all day long and she is out with me for several hours every day so, even when I have to run an errand, she is fine with it (and she knows I am going out because I always tell them).

Our Senegal, You-You, was screeching loudly whenever we left the house. We began repeating "Bye bye" whenever we left the house. He very quickly started saying "Bye bye, You-You, bye bye!" instead of the screaming. After we are out the door, he does screech for about a minute (we can hear it in the street), but the ability to use "bye bye" instead of just screaming, helps him. He also has words he uses when he wants out of the cage, "Vuoi uscire" (we are a bi-lingual family, this means "do you want to come out" in italian". When he wants out, he says this. Or if he wants to cage in a different location (like when he's ready to go to sleep and be taken into the bedroom). I am fascinated with cognitive speech in birds! I hope yours stops the screeching! :senegal:

The funny thing is that people get senegals because they believe that when people say they are a 'quiet' parrot, it actually means they are quiet, not realizing that it's just in relation to other parrots. But they can be quite noisy. My first senegal came to me because the owner was afraid she was going to be evicted from her constant screams.

My senegals never scream -and I do mean never, ever- but this is because they spend most of their day flying around, they've been kept at a super strict solar schedule for many years, have a good, fresh food diet and their routine is always the same, day after day, month after month, year after year so they always know what to expect and anticipate it.

Our You-You only screams for about a minute once we close the front door behind us. Before we close the door he says "bye bye, bye bye You-You", but then we can hear him screeching. It doesn't last long, it is however loud enough to be heard in the street downstairs, and we are on the second floor. I was interested that before we got him, I always read, "Senegals are not talkers". Well, he talks a blue streak, sometimes cognitively, and has picked up phrases - some of them used very communicatively with clear intentions in both english and Italian, aside from his own clicks, pops, and chirps.

They baby only screams when my car pulls into the driveway. It is LOUD. But stops when I open the front door.

They both vocalize when they fly, but they are sharp, short cries that I find very sweet, because they are clearly feeling joyful about flight.

Neither of mine scream. Sweetpea virtually just talks human while Zoey would, sometimes, do a little screech but not often. Not that they cannot if they wanted to but I guess that the fact that I never go anywhere for more than a couple of hours and then, only when I go shopping which is always after they are put in their cages makes it OK for them.

As to their speaking ability, I've had three females and one male and, of the females, only one spoke and just said her name, 'Cowboy', but the male is a genius at cognitive speech and able to have actual conversations with me. He has a large vocabulary of words and phrases and has even made up a couple of words -like 'NiteNite eat it' which means dinner to him. He is also quite bossy and loves to give commands to other animals, dogs, cats and birds - but the commands are ALWAYS spot on! Like he tells the dogs to 'Shut up!' when they bark or to "Get up there'' (for them to go upstairs), 'Go go go' (to go downstairs), 'Get in get in get in' (to go into a room), 'Stop it!' when there is a hullabaloo

The only thing he says which I have not been able to figure out why he does it or what exactly he means is when I am sweeping or mopping the floors and he follows me around asking me incessantly: 'Whachoodoing?' I always answer the same thing: "Cleaning. I am cleaning". I sweep and mop the floors every single morning and every single morning he follows me around asking the same thing: 'Whachoodoing?' to which he gets the same exact response and for the life of me, I don't know why because he should know by now what the answer is going to be! The only thing I can think of is that he is fascinated by the activity (although I don't see why) and that his "Whachoodoing?' is his way of letting me know of his fascination...
